The Tajos de Mogarejo natural monument is located in Montellano and was placed under protection in 2003. It features rock escarpments over 30 metres high and a diverse range of species, including carob trees.

Nature

Riparian forests with numerous tamarisks grow along the banks of the stream in the area of the Tajos de Mogarejo natural monument. The surrounding area features Mediterranean woodland and scrubland with carob trees, dwarf fan palms and rosemary.

Culture and History

Castillo de Cote is a Gothic castle built at the end of the 13th century on the orders of Alfonso X. The fortified complex consists of two concentric areas surrounded by walls. Its tower chapel is classified as a tetrabsidal donjon and is considered unique in the architecture of the Iberian Peninsula.

The restored Molino Pintao grain mill is located in the area of the natural monument. The Puente de la Vera Cruz is a single-arch bridge dating from the 17th century.

The floor plan of another building has three naves separated by pairs of Tuscan columns. The building dates from the 18th century, was constructed from limestone and pink marble from the Sierra de San Pablo, and has a Baroque stone façade.

The Romería de San Isidro Labrador de Montellano has been recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia.

Experiences

A hiking trail signposted by the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo begins on the central Avenida de Ronda in Montellano. Along this trail there is a reforested pine forest interspersed with holm oaks, typical Mediterranean shrubland and numerous orchids, which appear from mid-February onwards.

The Tajos de Mogarejo natural area is considered a suitable location for paragliding or hang-gliding.

The main features can be clearly distinguished: the landscape and hiking trail represent the natural environment and physical activity, while the castle, mill, bridge and 18th-century building represent different historical testimonies. Country bread, olive oil and cured meats complement this selection with regional products; the Feria combines product presentations, production demonstrations and tastings.

Montellano’s local products include country bread, extra virgin olive oil, as well as chacina and cured meats, particularly morcilla de asadura. The 4th Feria de la Matanza de Montellano presented traditionally produced chorizos, morcillas, chicharrones and other traditional home-slaughter products. At this Feria, demonstrations of cured-meat production and various tastings were offered.
