Estepa combines impressive architectural heritage with a confectionery tradition rich in history and a distinctive mountainous landscape. The Torre del Homenaje is particularly prominent as the architecturally most significant element of Estepa’s walled complex. The tower has a square floor plan, is 13 metres wide and 26 metres high. Inside, there is a square chamber with a Gothic ribbed vault on an octagonal plan. An engraved cross of the Order of Santiago symbolises Estepa’s affiliation with this commandery from 1267 to 1559. The Torre del Homenaje can be visited as part of guided tours.
Culture and history
The secular and religious architecture also spans several eras. The Casa Palacio de los Marqueses de Cerverales is an example of civil Baroque architecture completed in 1756. The building has fully preserved its original features, was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1984 and is now a BIC. The Iglesia y convento de Santa Clara was founded in 1599 and built mainly during the 17th century. Its Baroque main altarpiece was created by Pedro Ruiz Paniagua.
Holy Week in Estepa is recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia. It complements the visible evidence of the town’s history with a religious tradition that remains firmly rooted to this day. In the Primitivo Convento de Santa Clara, furnished rooms have been preserved that illustrate the monastery’s historical appearance and explain the functions of its original rooms. The convent has been converted into a museum, making these interiors accessible as part of the cultural offering.
Museums and special places
The Museo Arqueológico Padre Martín Recio displays prehistoric, protohistoric, Roman, Palaeochristian, Visigothic and Islamic exhibits. Among the objects is an Eros Dormido dating from the second quarter of the 2nd century AD. The museum is housed in a building whose construction began in 1671 as the Escuelas Pías. It later served as a prison until 1950, before being restored as a museum in 1993. Thus, a single institution presents both different historical cultures and the building’s changing history.
Chocomundo is another place dedicated entirely to chocolate. The facility has fifteen exhibition rooms, a screening room and a chocolate fountain. In a factory at Calle Écija 12, a workshop is offered by prior reservation, where visitors can make their own Mantecados.
Confectionery and wine
Mantecados and confectionery from Estepa are first documented in a sales document from 1559, which names Tristán Gómez as a local confectioner. The products “Mantecados de Estepa” and “Polvorones de Estepa” are covered by a protected geographical indication. The Regulatory Council guarantees and promotes quality control for these protected products.
The culinary offering also includes a tasting with four types of wine and tapas, available by prior reservation for 5 euros. Confectionery, wine and the historical evidence appear here as distinct facets of the place: the Mantecados point to a part of local production documented since the 16th century, while the protected geographical indication and the work of the Regulatory Council establish the current legal framework for the two products named above.
Nature
The area of Estepa belongs to the Sierra del Becerrero. There are numerous paths where hikers can collect, among other things, asparagus or esparto grass. Another landscape unit is the Sierra de Estepa, designated as a “Complejo Serrano de Interés Ambiental”. It reaches almost 850 metres and forms the highest elevation in the municipality of Estepa and its comarca.
The path surrounding the area connects the Manantial de Roya in the lower section with the road to Gilena in the upper section. Several natural viewpoints along this path offer panoramas of Estepa and the comarca. The combination of paths, opportunities for collecting and viewpoints describes the landscape as concretely as its designated significance and elevation.
Getting there
The A-92 is Andalusia’s main road transport artery. There is also a high-speed connection to Málaga, Córdoba and Madrid. The Puente Genil-Herrera station mentioned for this purpose is located about eight kilometres from Estepa.
