Holiday apartment in Lora del Río: Culture, Nature and History

Lora del Río's historical landmarks include the Casas Capitulares de Lora del Río. They are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category and are considered a significant example of Baroque capitular houses in the former Kingdom of Seville. The Castillo de Lora del Río is also a Bien de Interés Cultural; it was placed under protection on 29 June 1985. The archaeological site of the Castillo de Lora del Río is regarded as a castle dating from the Arab and Roman periods.

Culture and History

The archaeological area of Setefilla spans a particularly broad period of history. It reveals a development from the 2nd millennium BC to the 4th century BC, followed by later settlement in the Late Middle Ages. Setefilla is also associated with religious traditions: a procession takes place at the Ermita de la Virgen de Setefilla every year on 17 May, and a Romería on 8 September. By resolution of the Consejería de Turismo y Deporte of the Junta de Andalucía dated 8 September 1999, the Setefilla celebrations were recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía. The Venida de la Virgen to Lora del Río is generally celebrated every five years after her return to the Ermita, and exceptionally when there is a particular need.

Further buildings add to this historical picture. The Ermita de Santa Ana is a Mudéjar building from the 17th century. The Vía patrimonial de Lora del Río begins at Plaza de España and runs along Calle Luis Montoto y González de la Hoyuela, known locally as La Roda. At the Taller Artesano Monje, visitors can create their own clay work under guidance.

Individual houses and bridges also preserve distinctive architectural details. The Casa de los Leones was built in 1765; with the exception of the portal, its brick façade retains a sgraffito decoration that imitates ashlar masonry. A temple in Lora del Río was built between 1733 and 1764 based on a design by Diego Antonio Díaz. The Puente de Hierro was built in 1929 by the Asturian metallurgical company Sociedad Metalúrgica Duro-Felguera. According to local tradition, another bridge structure in Lora del Río is attributed both a Roman origin and an association with a road to Itálica.

Nature

Beyond the buildings, the landscape reveals further distinctive features. The Algarrobo de la Virgen de Setefilla stands on the mountain known as Campo de la Virgen, a few metres from the Ermita de la Virgen. From this tree, the foothills of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla and, to the south, the Vega del Guadalquivir can be seen. Just over two kilometres from the town centre lies the Dehesa de Matallana, an extensive woodland with pine and holm oak trees as well as native vegetation.

Cuisine

In November, the Aromas medievales gastronomic route adds a distinctive feature. Bars and restaurants in Lora del Río offer historical dishes as part of the route. This time-limited route combines local cuisine with an explicitly historical theme.

Getting There

Lora del Río has its own railway station with regional and medium-distance services. From Seville, the town can be reached via the A-4 towards Córdoba; at exit 506, continue onto the A-457.
