Culture

Several distinctive details form part of the town's sacred history. The walls of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción are still covered with typical Sevillian tiles. The Iglesia de la Asunción has Mudéjar origins and a Baroque main altar. The Simpecado of Espartinas was made in 1957 in the Sevillian Baroque style, using gold thread on green velvet; in the center, it bears the polychrome image of the Virgin carved from cypress wood.

The history of Holy Week is also associated with a special date: Domingo de Resurrección is considered the main day of Holy Week in Espartinas and has been recognized by the Andalusian tourism authority as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. During the procession, the Virgen de los Dolores is accompanied without a canopy by the 17th-century processional monstrance.

Another historical trace leads to the Arab alquería known as Mexina. It developed from a Roman villa called Messina.

It focuses on the stay of the Japanese samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and his companions, known as the Keichō embassy, at the Monasterio de Loreto in 1616; this stay lasted 13 months.

Hacienda de San Rafael, known as Casa de las Monjas, is now Espartinas's main civic center and houses, among other facilities, the municipal library and an exhibition hall. Hacienda Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, known as Guardiola, includes a visitor area that is open together with the study room. There, visitors can see the outdoor areas, the work courtyard, the machinery and the gardens.

The former Lagar of Hacienda Guardiola has preserved its original appearance. It enables visitors to learn about the region's traditional agricultural process and such buildings.

Discoveries

The Museo Didáctico de la Imaginería has a permanent exhibition that recreates a workshop of religious sculpture from the Spanish Golden Age. There is also a practical workshop where student groups apply techniques of polychrome sculpture.

Centro Hípico Riopudio offers riding lessons that begin with children learning how to handle ponies and performing basic exercises. From the age of seven, riding focuses on classical dressage and progresses to advanced riding, with possible professional ambitions.

Cuisine

Mostos and wines are produced in Espartinas at the Fragata, Loreto and Patacabra wineries. A distinctive sweet tradition is associated with Tortas Andrés Gaviño: Andrés Gaviño specializes in artisan-made tortas, each individually shaped by hand. Tortas Andrés Gaviño is a family business with a century-old tradition of producing traditional Sevillian confectionery.
