El Ronquillo: Holiday Rentals Between Hiking Trails, Landscapes and Culture

El Ronquillo lies between the Rivera de Huelva and the Rivera de Cala in the foothills of the Sierra Morena. The landscape ranges from dehesa to higher-altitude areas with panoramic views. The Sala de Exposiciones displays artistic and cultural works from El Ronquillo, and admission is free. During the winter months, traditional matanzas also take place every year; various sausages and products from the sierra are available, including chorizo, jamón and caña de lomo.

Nature

The Ruta Sierra Clara II is a short circular trail with steep inclines. In the higher section, it offers extensive panoramic views. The Pantano La Minilla provides opportunities to spend a day with the family, enjoy the landscape and surroundings, barbecue and go hiking.

Hiking and Cycling

The SL-A 254 Las Cañadas is a 2.1-kilometre linear hiking trail each way with a low level of difficulty. It begins in the built-up area of El Ronquillo and leads through a dehesa landscape with several streams, which may be dry depending on the season. The route can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Another route begins directly in the town: the Ruta del Barranco de la Lana starts at Pozo Celeste or Piletas and is designated by the Junta de Andalucía as a route for sporting use. The Vía Verde de El Ronquillo runs along the former railway line that connected the Minas de Cala with San Juan de Aznalfarache. This railway operated for more than 50 years.

Culture

The Parroquia del Divino Salvador was built in the early years of the 17th century and rebuilt between 1774 and 1777.

A small stone chapel was built in the first half of the 16th century on a flattened hill beside the old road and near the site of a medieval pilgrim's cross.

Local Traditions

Gurumelos, scientifically known as Amanita ponderosa, are considered a mushroom characteristic of the area and are particularly common in March. They can be sampled in bars and restaurants in El Ronquillo.
