Culture and history

The parish church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves in Alanís is a traditional three-nave church dating from 1356. By Royal Decree 554/1982, it was declared a national historic-artistic monument. The entire front area of the main altar is adorned with a valuable Baroque altarpiece from the 16th century. The church can be visited during service times.

Local tradition includes the Fuente de las Pilitas, an Arab brick spring with an associated basin. To this day, it is used to irrigate the nearby gardens and as a watering place for livestock. The spring is also associated with the local legend “Encanto de las Pilitas”.

Nature and trails

The natural surroundings of Alanís include Mediterranean woodland landscapes with dehesas of holm oaks and cork oaks. The Sendero de los Aguardienteros – El Título begins in Alanís next to the castle entrance, passes through woodland areas dominated by holm oaks and cork oaks, and runs parallel to the Rivera del Benalija on its final section. The Turruca, an old stone structure, can be reached via the “Dehesas de Sierra Morena” trail. It was used, and is still partly used, as a tool shed on threshing floors and in olive groves. Among the species found around Alanís are red deer, wild boar, Spanish imperial eagles and griffon vultures.

Festivals and regional products

The Jornadas Medievales de Alanís were established in 2003 and recognised in 2019 as an “Acontecimiento de Interés Turístico de Andalucía”. The event is scheduled for the first weekend of September. It includes street theatre, fire shows, parades and a crafts market, transforming the town into a medieval setting.

The Mercado Medieval de Alanís takes place every year and offers tastings of typical regional products, including ham, cheese, cured meats and oils.

Transport

Alanís currently has no train service. The nearest railway stations are in Guadalcanal and El Pedroso.
