Villaverde Del Río – Holiday Apartment, Nature and History on the Guadalquivir
In Villaverde del Río, visitors can go hiking; they can fish on the Guadalquivir in Villaverde del Río. There are also natural pools, historical traces, and religious heritage, each with its own locations and stories.
Nature
Las Calderas consists of four natural pools surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. Swimming is permitted in these pools. Las Calderas was formed by the erosion caused by the water of the Río Siete Arroyos on granite rock. Here, water and rock together determine the shape of this place, while the surrounding Mediterranean vegetation forms the landscape setting.
Culture
A tour through the historic centre can follow the fourteen ceramic Stations of the Cross from Plaza de Blas Infante to Plaza de Andalucía. The route connects two named squares with a series of stations integrated into the town centre.
During the procession of the Virgen de Aguas Santas, held on 8 September, stops are made from house to house. The youngest child of each family is carried, and households with a sick person are visited. A building was erected over the site of the apparition spring; water flowed through a vaulted channel and emerged again in the courtyard. Sculptures, paintings, and goldsmiths’ work from the 16th to the 19th century are also highlighted.
History
At the confluence of the Río Siete Arroyos and the former course of the Guadalquivir, known as Cañada de la Molineta, two walls of a medieval castle still remain. One of these walls has a horseshoe arch. Metal objects from the Bronze Age, including arrows and swords, were found on the Mesa Redonda. Thus, various locations feature both architectural remains from the Middle Ages and archaeological finds from a considerably earlier period.
Getting There
A bus service connects Seville, departing from Macarena, and Cantillana via Brenes and Villaverde del Río. On weekdays, it runs hourly in both directions. The railway station in neighbouring Brenes is approximately 5 km from Villaverde del Río.
