Holiday apartment in Castilleja De La Cuesta – Discover churches, haciendas and festivals

Castilleja De La Cuesta combines striking churches, historic haciendas, lively festival traditions and craftsmanship that is still carefully preserved today. A special starting point is the Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol: its history dates back to 1370, while the Neo-Mudéjar building features three naves separated by pointed arches. The main altar contains the image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad from the 16th century. There are also sculptures of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and Santiago Apóstol Peregrino from the 18th century. The church is also home to a green-glazed baptismal font made of fired clay, dated to 1502.

Culture

Another church is the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. It preserves paintings from the former Convento de la O, as well as a Baroque main altar from 1702 created by Cristóbal Guadix. The parish church of Santa María de la Concepción is also associated with a history dating back to 1400: at that time, the Archbishop of Seville permanently entrusted the church to the friars of the Third Order of Saint Francis. Significant restorations were carried out in the mid-18th century and during the first third of the 19th century.

The Palacio de Hernán Cortés dates from the 16th century and features Neo-Mudéjar influences. Hernán Cortés spent the final years of his life there and died in 1547. In the mid-19th century, the palace passed into the possession of the Dukes of Montpensier, who commissioned extensive conversion, expansion and beautification work inside and in the gardens. Today, its rooms house a school and an institute.

The Hacienda de la Sagrada Familia also preserves several historical layers. The complex, dating from between the 18th and 19th centuries, is located in the town centre and displays the typical appearance of an olive-oil hacienda. It includes areas for producing wine and oil, as well as an elegant residential area with a garden. An oil mill has also been preserved at the hacienda; today, it houses the municipal Casa de la Cultura. The façade of the Hacienda Santa Bárbara belongs to a former olive-oil hacienda. Its simple, rustic portal design is complemented by a gallery with white marble columns.

The transport links can also be described specifically: Castilleja de la Cuesta is directly connected to the road network via the A-49 motorway between Seville and Huelva. Buses to the Aljarafe area depart from Seville’s Plaza de Armas bus station and stop in Castilleja de la Cuesta.

Festivals and traditional crafts

One of the town’s characteristic traditions is La Vuelta. It takes place on Easter Sunday and has been recognised as a “Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía” since 1999. The Fiestas in honour of the Inmaculada Concepción take place during a fixed period: they are celebrated from 1 to 8 December and include, among other things, the Santo Rosario, a church service, the lowering of the statue of the Virgin from the main altar and a Besamanos ceremony.

The festival of the Virgen de Guía is celebrated in Castilleja de la Cuesta on 2 July. During the celebrations, the image of the Virgen is carried in a procession through the town’s streets. Alfombras Baldomero is also associated with a long-established craft tradition. The company has existed since its foundation in 1925 and specialises in handmade carpets and tapestries using Turkish and Spanish knotting techniques. Self-guided and guided tours of the restoration and craft-production workshops are offered in Spanish. The tour is scheduled to last 30 minutes and takes place during the visiting season from October to April.

Cuisine

Tortas de aceite have their own local history. Their production in Castilleja de la Cuesta began in the second half of the 19th century and developed into one of the town’s major economic sectors. This pastry is therefore also one of the defining historical traces that distinguish Castilleja De La Cuesta beyond its buildings and festivals.
