La Puebla de Cazalla reveals its character through historic sites, art, traditional culture, regional cuisine and the landscape of the municipal area. The town’s diverse facets include museums in a former olive oil mill, a 16th-century pósito and a chalet, a long tradition of festivals, and the extensive El Pinalejo.

Culture and History

The Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico de La Puebla de Cazalla is located in Hacienda la Fuenlonguilla, a former olive oil mill that operated from the 19th to the 20th century. The museum presents local arts and customs, as well as the history of La Puebla de Cazalla from the Neolithic period to the Muslim era. An exhibition of 19 photographs is also dedicated to the traditional production of solid bricks and roof tiles.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo José María Moreno Galván is housed in a 16th-century pósito whose original arcade has been preserved. It features temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection with works by national and international avant-garde and post-avant-garde artists. Artists from Andalusia are particularly well represented.

The Museo Antonio Fuentes Zurita is located in a chalet and is divided into a vestibule and four rooms. The exhibition includes biographical information, contemporary portraits and bullfighting posters covering Antonio Fuentes’ career from 1892 to 1934. Another historical trace leads to Castillo de Luna: it began in the 5th century BC as a defensive installation of the Iberian Turdetani and, 200 years later, became a watchtower under the Carthaginians.

Traditions

A regular feature of the cultural calendar is the annual Reunión de Cante Jondo. It was founded on the initiative of José Menese and Francisco Moreno Galván; the first event took place in September 1967. The Reunión de Cante Jondo is currently held every year at Hacienda Ntra. Sra. del Carmen (La Fuenlonguilla).

Semana Santa is also shaped by scheduled processions of the local Hermandades. Four Hermandades hold penitential processions on Palm Sunday, Holy Tuesday, Maundy Thursday, during the Madrugá and on Good Friday.

Olive Oil and Cuisine

The Museo del Aceite is located in the former mill of Hacienda La Fuenlonguilla, dating from 1858. It reconstructs the olive oil production process from harvesting to extraction. As part of the Museo del Aceite, the former living quarters of the owners at Hacienda La Fuenlonguilla can also be visited.

Local cuisine includes typical dishes and sweets such as aceitunas prietas, jarria, patatas con bacalao, majaillo, stews with asparagus and tagarninas, as well as entornaos. Thus, alongside the history of the olive oil mill, the culinary side of La Puebla de Cazalla also focuses on specific regional dishes and products.

Landscape and Trails

El Pinalejo lies in the southeast of the municipal area. The area covers 9,378 hectares and features Mediterranean vegetation dominated by pine trees, accompanied by holm oaks and Mediterranean scrubland. The landscape of El Pinalejo offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and camping.

A total of eleven hiking routes are planned for La Puebla de Cazalla, three of which are currently signposted. The current situation therefore combines a larger planned network of trails with the routes that have already been marked.
