Holiday apartment in Castilleja del Campo – culture, festivals and history

Castilleja del Campo combines a historic townscape with lively festivals and a landscape between the Vega del Guadiamar and the Campiña. The town lies in the Vega del Guadiamar, west of the Aljarafe comarca. The northern half of the municipal area borders the Campiña del Campo de Tejada. Castilleja del Campo is easy to explore on foot via its streets and squares; the surrounding area can also be discovered by bicycle. The historic centre is characterised by white Andalusian houses.

Culture

The town's history dates back to Roman times. Numerous Roman remains have been found in Castilleja del Campo, including graves, geometrically decorated mosaics and terra sigillata dating from the reigns of the emperors Claudius to Hadrian. Historians conclude from this that the town was probably already inhabited in Roman times.

Cultural attractions include the Museo de Aperos de Labranza. It was established in 2009 by converting a former hall that had previously been used for poultry farming. The museum contains more than 2,000 agricultural tools and antiques collected by the Moreno Zaragoza family over many years. The town's historic architecture also preserves traces of different periods. A manor house with agricultural outbuildings and an oil mill was built at the end of the 19th century. Only the façade, courtyard and some outbuildings remain in good condition.

A Baroque church in Castilleja del Campo was built in the last quarter of the 18th century on the site of an earlier 16th-century church in the Sevillian Gothic-Mudéjar style. The older church had been destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The Sagrario Chapel of the church contains a Crucificado de pasta de junco from the late 16th century. Another testimony to local memory is a brick-built monument crowned by a wrought-iron cross. The festival of the May Crosses was once celebrated at this site, a tradition that has now been lost.

Festivals and theatre

The events calendar ranges from theatre to religiously oriented patron-saint festivals. Held annually in October and November, Otoño Cultural includes a music week, a children's week and the Muestra de Teatro Aficionado. Castilleja del Campo also hosts the established Certamen de Teatro Aficionado María Moliner. It is open to all non-professional theatre groups; the 14th edition is scheduled for 2026.

The patron-saint festivals in honour of the Virgen del Buen Suceso and San Miguel Arcángel are open to visitors. Their programme includes bicycle ribbon races, known as Carreras de cinta en bicicleta. The festivities begin on a Thursday with an afternoon pilgrimage into the surrounding area. In the early hours of the morning, the nocturnal tradition of setting alight a fire bull is also observed.

Cuisine

The local cuisine includes traditional dishes such as migas with sardines, Caldereta de cordero and Tostón with grilled sardines. Homemade sweet specialities include Rosco de petaca and Piñonate. They are made by hand in local households and are eaten especially at Christmas and Easter. Both savoury dishes and sweets associated with particular seasons therefore form part of the town's culinary identity.

Getting around

Castilleja del Campo is connected by road via the A-472, the former Seville–Huelva national road, and the A-49 motorway (E-1). The motorway can be reached via the Carrión de los Céspedes exit, approximately 2 km away. On the Sendero del Guadiamar, a bridge crosses the A-472; this road connects Sanlúcar la Mayor with Castilleja del Campo. A bus service also connects Seville, Huévar, Carrión and Castilleja del Campo.
