Holiday apartment in Palomares Del Rio – Arab Baths and haciendas

Palomares Del Rio showcases its history through buildings whose origins range from the 12th century to the early 20th century. The Arab Baths, several haciendas with mills and towers, and the tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Estrella bring together architecture, former economic activities and impressions of the landscape. This cultural picture is complemented by the Ruta del Agua and a limited-time gastronomic event.

Culture

The Arab Baths stand out as a particularly distinctive testament to the town’s earlier history. They are a complex dating from the Almohad period, from the 12th to the 13th century, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and unique in the rural surroundings of Seville province. The archaeological site includes a garden designed in the Hispano-Muslim style. Colourful tiles characterise the fountains there, which are connected by channels.

Another historic ensemble is the 16th-century Hacienda Casa Alegre. It preserves almost all of its areas, including the manor courtyard, the service courtyard, the olive mill and the residence. This means that not only individual structural elements but also different functions within a hacienda stand alongside one another. At the 18th-century Hacienda Ulloa, original wooden beams and a press stone have been preserved in the olive mill.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Estrella also bears a distinctive architectural trace. Its tower is of Mudéjar origin; its first storey contains seven horseshoe and multilobed arches. Here, these architectural forms are immediately evident in a single tower, complementing the agricultural complexes with a religious building.

Further haciendas lead through later periods. Today, only a 16th-century mill building remains of the Hacienda de Córdoba. The tower of the Hacienda San Rafael dates from the early 20th century, is attributed to the Sevillian architect Aníbal González and is regarded as an example of Andalusian regionalism.

The Hacienda Santa María dates from the 18th century. Its olive-oil mill building and its counterweight tower are well preserved. The Hacienda El Molino also dates from the 18th century. There, the counterweight tower has a clearly historical function: it was formerly used to produce olive oil. Thus, preserved structural elements stand alongside buildings of which only a single mill building remains.

Nature

The Ruta del Agua is classified as a route with a low level of difficulty. This classification therefore clearly refers to the difficulty of the route and does not describe any other conditions.

The Ruta del Agua is home to native birds and riverside vegetation. The path thereby connects the scenic side of Palomares Del Rio with observable features along the banks.

Cuisine

Palomares del Río had its own culinary feature in the form of the III. Ruta de la Tapa Mozárabe. From 30 April to 10 May, it offered tapas, desserts and cocktails inspired by the historic cuisine of Palomares. The event combines the designation “Mozárabe” with a time-limited offering from several food and drink categories.
