Srpenica combines a water-shaped landscape with hiking trails and traces of cultural history. Between Sušec Gorge, the Boka–Lipuc Trail and places connected with the Bronze Age lie different facets of the village and its surroundings.
Nature
Sušec Gorge is located near Srpenica in the Soča Valley. Over thousands of years, the water has created natural slides, pools and narrow passages in the limestone. The Boka–Lipuc hiking trail leads through this landscape: near Srpenica, it reaches the 61 m long Lipuc footbridge, which is considered the longest suspension bridge over the Soča. From the Boka–Lipuc Trail, a roughly 300 m long detour also leads to the right to the entry and exit point for canyoning on Sušec Stream.
Water
Rafting trips on the Soča usually begin at Boka Waterfall or near the village of Srpenica and continue to the village of Trnovo ob Soči. During canyoning in Sušec Gorge, the individual waterfalls can either be jumped over or safely bypassed by land.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint Florian stands in the center of Srpenica. It dates from 1755. About 1 km before the settlement of Srpenica lies the Ograjenca archaeological site; an inhumation grave was confirmed there during the excavation. Alongside Bovec, the Srpenica burial ground is considered the northernmost site of the Svetolucian culture. Ograjenca lies on a prehistoric route that connected the Tolmin and Bovec areas with Carinthia and had already been used since the Bronze Age.
A stone cross near Srpenica commemorates Countess Lucy Christalnigg, who is considered the first civilian victim of the First World War in the Soča Valley. The Lucy Christalnigg Monument, also a stone cross, is located on the Bovec–Kobarid regional road (R1–203), about 1 km beyond Srpenica. It is open at all times and accessible free of charge.
Trails
The Boka–Lipuc circular hiking trail passes Srpenica. From the trail, the village center and village church can be reached in just a few steps. The Srpenica 2 entry and exit point is located in the Municipality of Bovec. The popular Juliana Trail extends farther: it runs along the slopes of the Julian Alps and through Triglav National Park to Brda and Nova Gorica.
