Nature and Trails

The Soča Trail runs through Triglav National Park along the Soča River from its source to Bovec and connects quiet sections of the Soča with the Trenta Valley. The trailhead can be reached by seasonal public transport. There are several hiking and walking trails in the Soča Valley: the Vodenca–Jablanca walking trail is around 7.7 km long and takes about two hours, while the walking trail along the Glijun stream is around 7.4 km long and also takes about two hours. The Zavrzelno walking trail extends for around 8.2 km and takes about three hours.

For longer distances, the Juliana Trail is available, a long-distance hiking trail of around 270 km around the Julian Alps. Stage 13 leads from Kobarid to Bovec and is 21.3 km long. The route between Bovec and Žaga features a striking waterfall: Boka Waterfall is clearly visible from the road. To the right of the bridge, a well-marked path leads to a viewpoint in about 15 minutes.

Water and Activities

Rafting, hydrospeed and kayaking are offered on the Soča and Koritnica rivers in Bovec. Canyoning is offered in the area of the Sušec stream. Paragliding is also available as an activity in Bovec. In and around Bovec, there are opportunities for road cycling as well as mountain biking.

Culture and History

Kluže Fortress is located 4 km from Bovec in the direction of the Predel Pass. Beneath the fortress is a well-preserved, 400-metre-long tunnel dating from before the Second World War, which can be visited as part of guided tours. The fortress also features a permanent exhibition.

The Čelo Open-Air Museum is part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic and offers views over the Bovec basin. It can be reached via a mountain path from the village of Kal-Koritnica; the trailhead is on the road between Bovec and Trenta, about 3 km from Bovec. The restored Ravni Laz dairy building is located on the road between Bovec and Ravni Laz and now serves as a tourist and museum information point.

The events of the Isonzo Front are also present in the surrounding area. Around 600 soldiers who fought on the Isonzo Front are buried in the military cemetery near Bovec.

Local Cuisine

Bovški krafi are a local sweet made from the Bovec pear. Locals traditionally ate them on Christmas Eve. The cheese is made from raw sheep’s milk; up to 20% may be supplemented with cow’s or goat’s milk. It has protected designation of origin status.
