Trenta lies entirely within Triglav National Park and combines the course of the Soča with special natural and cultural sites. The source of the Soča emerges from a cave with an underground lake. From Koča pri Izviru Soče, it can be reached via a marked trail in 15 minutes. This means that the valley brings together short routes to an impressive source site, a longer river trail and insights into the nature of the national park.

Nature

The Mlinarica mountain stream has also left its own geological mark: it has carved out a one-kilometre-long and 100-metre-deep gorge. An eight-metre-high waterfall is located at the Mlinarica’s confluence. These two measurements reveal the different forms in which water shapes the landscape of Trenta – underground at the source of the Soča, as a gorge along the mountain stream and as a waterfall at its mouth.

Another botanical highlight is Juliana. The Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden is the oldest alpine botanical garden in a natural setting on Slovenian territory. Albert Bois de Chesne founded Juliana in 1926. The garden can be reached via the Bovec–Trenta road. A guide for identifying 100 plants in the garden is available for visitors in Slovenian, Italian, German, English and French.

Hiking

The Soča Trail is a trail in Triglav National Park that follows the Soča from its source to Bovec. It is 25 km long in total. The terrain is technically easy, but includes short steep sections. The route passes through forests and meadows and runs along the Soča. The starting point of the Soča Trail can be reached by public transport.

The upper section begins at Koča pri Izviru Soče and ends in Na Logu in Trenta with a visit to the information centre of Triglav National Park, Dom Trenta. Seven information points along the upper section present the valley’s heritage, nature, geology and forestry. The trail therefore connects the source of the Soča with a section in which the landscape and the valley’s themes are explored at several stops.

Culture

Dom Trenta presents the natural features of Triglav National Park. A special feature of the museum is the video installation “Secrets of the Soča – Time Horizon” by Andrej Zdravič. Dom Trenta stands at the end of the upper section of the Soča Trail in Na Logu in Trenta and complements the route with a museum presentation of the national park’s nature.
