Culture

The Praetorian Palace combines Late Gothic, Renaissance and Venetian Gothic architecture. The palace complex acquired its present appearance in the mid-15th century. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Nazarius, is one of the largest churches in Slovenia. The open-air lapidarium of the Pokrajinski muzej Koper is a venue for music and other events throughout the year.

At Koper’s old city walls and the Mandrač, Taverna Koper served as an important salt warehouse before becoming an important cultural and events centre for the city. History

Several details tell the story of Koper’s former functions and the city’s connections with its surroundings. The Da Ponte Fountain acquired its present Baroque appearance in the mid-17th century. It once marked the endpoint of an aqueduct that brought water from the nearby hills into the city of Koper.

The bell tower of Koper is a 54-metre-high example of Romanesque defensive architecture and offers views over the city and its surroundings. Its interior contains the oldest bell in Slovenia. It was cast in Venice in 1333 and still rings today.

Nature

Another side of Koper can be seen in the Škocjanski Zatok nature reserve. Nearly three quarters of the area consist of a brackish-water lagoon with nesting islands, salt marshes and mudflats.
