The Church of the Holy Trinity in Hrastovlje is designated as a cultural monument of national importance. Visits to the church are limited to a maximum of 25 visitors at a time in order to protect the painted surfaces and maintain a suitable indoor climate.

Culture and history

Inside the church, preserved Glagolitic and Latin inscriptions are kept as valuable historical sources. The Church of the Holy Trinity is also a valuable cultural attraction, known for its extensive medieval frescoes. They include the famous Danse Macabre. The fresco cycle was painted in 1490 by Janez iz Kastva.

Another cultural reference leads from the church interior to the hill opposite the Church of the Holy Trinity. There, on the road to Dol, stands the Šavrinka statue by the academic sculptor Jože Pohlen. He donated the statue to Hrastovlje in 1990 as a symbol of Slovenian Istria. Hrastovlje is one of the Istrian villages associated with the Šavrinka women traders. These women transported goods between central Istria and the coastal towns. The Šavrinke were young women and girls from Slovenian Istria who worked as domestic helpers in the coastal towns or sold various agricultural products.

Village character

Hrastovlje is characterized by stone houses, closely built-up lanes and portals made of white Karst stone. Alongside the church and the Šavrinka statue, the villagescape therefore forms a distinct and clearly recognizable part of the village.

Nature and trails

The Church of the Holy Trinity stands in a landscape typical of the Karst, with red soil, stone walls and vineyards. The named trails around Hrastovlje include the P2 trail, which leads to a viewpoint overlooking Koper, Trieste and large parts of Istria. Galerija Pohlen is located at a fork in the trail along the P2 route.

The P4 trail offers views from the long Kuk-Lačna ridge over the Karst edge, the interior of Istria and the Bay of Koper. The trail names and viewpoints thus bring different landscape references together: the typical Karst at the church site, views across Istria, and vistas of Koper and Trieste.
