Holiday apartment in Koštabona between cultural heritage and water springs

Koštabona has a characteristic elliptical shape and a densely built-up villagescape made of sandstone. In addition, there is the Water Springs Trail, called “Pot vodnih virov” in Slovenian, which begins in the village centre and leads into the surroundings of Škrline. Between churches, chapels, archaeological traces and the landscape along the Dragonja, the village thus brings together several clearly recognisable facets.

Culture

The closely spaced buildings of Koštabona are made of sandstone and adjoin the main road at right angles. In the village centre stands a chapel dedicated to Blessed Deacon Elias, built in 1742. Its impressively sculpted main portal is one of the striking details of this building.

The Church of St Cosmas and Damian in Koštabona dates from 1446. Its Gothic presbytery and 15th-century frescoes have been preserved. The Church of St Andrew in Koštabona also dates from the 15th century; it stands at the end of Koštabona’s natural rocky spur. In the inventory of the architectural ecclesiastical heritage of the City Municipality of Koper, St Andrew is listed as a monument.

Koštabona is recognised in the Slovenian Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage as settlement heritage. The archaeological traces include a prehistoric hillfort near Koštabona, evidenced by finds. In Late Antiquity, it was transformed into the strategically important Roman fortification of Castrum Bonae, which protected the trade route in the Dragonja Valley. The name Koštabona is said to derive from this Roman fortification, which was converted into a medieval defensive tower. Sv. Helena is named as one of two archaeological sites in Koštabona.

Nature

The Water Springs Trail, called “Pot vodnih virov” in Slovenian, begins in the square in front of the old school, or the village centre of Koštabona. An information board marks the trail and displays a route map as well as a brief explanatory text. The trail can also be cycled.

In the surroundings of Koštabona, the Water Springs Trail leads to Škrline and can continue from there as a circular route back to Koštabona. At Škrline, visitors can see cascades, a plunge pool and rapids on the Dragonja. Škrline is also located in the same area, within the Dragonja and its tributaries’ landscape park, which is designated as a protected area.
