Koper combines Venetian-influenced architectural heritage with distinctive landmarks, impressions of nature and a route through several Slovenian settlements. Between urban history, museums, lagoon landscapes and wine, a variety of experiences await you during your days in the surrounding area.

Culture

In the city centre of Koper, a strong Venetian influence is evident in the architectural heritage. One defining building is the Koper Bell Tower, also known as the City Tower: the Romanesque defensive structure is 54 metres high and houses the bell of Saint Nazarius, cast in Venice in 1333. It is considered the oldest still-functioning bell in Slovenia. The City Tower also offers views over Koper and the surrounding area.

The Koper Regional Museum brings together various historical and artistic themes. Its main building houses archaeological, art-historical, historical and cultural-historical, as well as modern-historical collections. There is also a virtual 3D experience: special glasses allow certain works of art to be viewed three-dimensionally. Koper’s tourist information centre is located on the ground floor of the Praetorian Palace.

Taverna Koper is also one of the city’s historic sites. It was built around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries as a salt warehouse next to the old town walls and the harbour. Today, it serves as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, workshops and other events.

Nature and route

In the immediate vicinity of Koper, the Škocjanski Zatok nature reserve covers 122 hectares and is home to 259 bird species. Here, a lagoon combines brackish- and freshwater habitats with salt marshes and mudflats.

The K5 circular route runs via Koper, Bertoki, Škofije, Plavje, Urbanci, Tinjan, Miši (Dekani), Bertoki and back to Koper. It is 27 kilometres long and takes 2 to 2.5 hours. The route therefore connects several named places in a clearly defined circular tour.

Wine and events

The Vinakoper wine boutique in Koper offers a tasting area for self-guided tastings for individuals and groups of up to 10 people. For groups of more than 10 people, Vinakoper offers guided tours of the wine cellar with tasting by prior arrangement and appointment reservation.

Koper has a railway station, good road connections by car or bus and can also be reached by sea.
