Holiday apartment in Krkavče: Menhir, church and Istrian culture

Krkavče carries its history in unusual places: the Krkavški kamen is a 2.5-metre-high menhir with two figurative depictions and a solar nimbus. Together with a church on exposed bedrock, archaeological sites and vivid insights into Istrian customs, this creates a multifaceted picture of the village.

Culture and history

The parish church of Saint Michael the Archangel stands on exposed bedrock. The church acquired its present form through extensions and alterations in the first half of the 18th century; inside, it has three altars.

The archaeological sites of Krkavče also preserve various traces of bygone eras. Sv. Štefan preserves the ruins of a sacred building and skeletal graves. Gradišče is a prehistoric hillfort with visible defensive walls. Another special feature of local tradition is that Krkavče is one of the places in Slovenian Istria where olive palms were woven.

At the living museum Hiša Vrešje, visitors can take part in guided tours and learn about the history and customs of Istria. The ethnological collection presents life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The interior rooms include a kitchen with an open hearth. At the Carcauec house, visitors can taste olive oil, table olives preserved in brine and persimmon vinegar; the experience also includes a presentation of traditional Istrian costumes.

The Krkavški kamen is located about 500 metres east of the cemetery in the village of Krkavče. A Roman road and a Roman archaeological site were located near the stone.

Paths through the landscape

Krkavče is included in two signposted routes with different lengths and modes of travel. The 35-kilometre cycling loop “Mimo krkavškega kamna (K10)” passes through Krkavče. It is of moderate difficulty and runs along paved and gravel paths. The route’s name explicitly refers to the Krkavški kamen.

The 13-kilometre hiking loop “Po Šavrinskem gričevju (P19)” starts and ends in Nova vas and passes through Krkavče. Among other places, it runs past the Krkavški kamen and the natural rock platform in Krkavče. This places a longer cycling loop and a shorter hiking loop, each with clearly named routes, side by side.
