Boršt lies at an elevation of 353 metres above sea level on Mount Varda and is officially recognised as part of Slovenia’s immovable cultural heritage. Culture

The Boršt Mediterranean Garden was opened next to the old school. It is intended to serve as an educational centre for preserving and promoting the traditional plant life and cuisine of the northern Adriatic region. Its facilities include themed beds with herbs, fruit and vegetables. Thus, the village focuses not only on the landscape itself, but also on the cultivation of plants and traditional culinary themes.

Boršt’s religious history includes the Chapel of St Nazarij and the Church of St Roch and St Sebastian. The Chapel of St Nazarij is dedicated to Koper’s first bishop and patron saint, St Nazarij. Celebrations in honour of St Nazarij are held at the chapel every year on 19 June. They include a holy mass and a procession accompanied by the brass band Mužika sv. Lazar Boršt. The Church of St Roch and St Sebastian dates from the 13th century and is known for its Romanesque architecture and Baroque-influenced interior.

Landscape

Boršt’s cultural landscape is characterised by undulating flysch hills and agricultural terraces on ridgelines above river valleys. From Boršt, there are views of the Starec stream valley, Koper and Trieste, and, in clear weather, the entire Gulf of Trieste. Semi, a mountain, lies in the immediate surroundings. Other mountains near Boršt include Brajkov Vrh and Ravnica. The elevation on Varda and the varied landscape give the village a clear geographical setting.

History

During the Second World War, Boršt served as an important refuge. The Koper town command operated in its surroundings during the Second World War. One specific event from this period took place on 30 January 1945: during the Second World War, an American pilot parachuted into Boršt from a crashing aircraft; the villagers hid him and helped him. The monument commemorating the landing of the American paratrooper recalls this wartime event in Boršt.

Activities

The K1 cycling route through the Refošk region passes through Boršt. It is described as suitable for more experienced cyclists and includes several climbs and descents. The route is therefore clearly characterised by its course and elevation profile, without extending its level of difficulty into a general recommendation. On 8 February, Slovenia’s cultural holiday, a traditional hike to the Frenk bunker is also organised in Boršt.
