Dekani: Holiday Apartment, Gothic Church and Parenzana

The Church of the Assumption of Mary immediately introduces Dekani's historical side. The church is a single-nave Gothic building dating from the 13th century. Its Gothic presbytery has a natural-stone vault bearing the coats of arms of Bishop Valaresso and other families. The church also has a 25-metre-high bell tower in the style of an Aquileia bell tower, which was built in 1841. Dekani Cemetery also contains the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1858.

Paths and landscape

The paths also connect Dekani with the surrounding landscapes. Every year at the beginning of October, the Dekani Tourist Association organises a traditional mass hike along the Dekani–Tinjan–Dekani circular route. For cyclists, the “Pot na Tinjan – od morja do kamna” cycle tour is marked as K5. The circular cycle route is 27 kilometres long, features challenging climbs, passes through Miši in Dekani and offers views of the Gulf of Trieste, the Gulf of Koper, the Osp Valley and the Karst Edge.

Another connection is the Parenzana, also known as “Pot zdravja in prijateljstva”. It is a 123-kilometre cycle and hiking trail that follows a former narrow-gauge railway from Trieste through Slovenia to Poreč. The Parenzana leads to Dekani along a road closed to cars.

Castelliere di Elleri, a ruin site, is located in the immediate vicinity of Dekani. Monte Zuccherino, a mountain, and Monte Castellier, a mountain, are also located nearby.
