Črni Kal: Holiday Apartment, Architectural Heritage and Cycling Routes

Črni Kal combines architectural heritage, historical traces, landscape and cycling routes. Various testimonies and clearly described routes stand side by side; the spectrum ranges from sacred and secular architecture to paths through the terrain of the Karst Edge.

Culture

The Church of St. Valentine is listed as a monument of sacred architectural heritage. Its independent bell tower dates from 1802 and is noticeably leaning due to the special ground conditions. The tower thus complements the church with an independent architectural detail featuring a clear date and distinctive form.

The Benko House adds a different architectural accent. It was built in 1489 by Andrej and Benko and is considered the oldest example of folk architecture in Slovenia. At the same time, it is a residential building; its interior is not accessible to visitors. The year of construction, builders and classification as folk architecture are just as much part of this house as the clear restriction on access to the interior.

At the fortress of Črni Kal, the place name is supplemented by another designation: in the monument register, it bears the name San Sergio Fortress and is listed as a secular architectural monument. The remains of San Sergio Castle lie above the Rižana Valley on the edge of the Karst and are a historical monument from the 11th century.

The structures therefore differ in function, designation and historical context. The church, residential house, fortress and castle remains are not uniform testimonies, but each represents its own facet of Črni Kal’s architectural history.

Routes and Landscape

Route P3 continues along a gravel track to the rocky edge above Črni Kal and passes through the richly vegetated, strongly varied terrain of the Karst Edge. A visitor centre is located in Črni Kal below the viaduct. Thus, for P3, both the specific surface and the route to the rocky edge as well as the landscape form of the Karst Edge are identified.

The Around Tinjan cycling loop (K2) also passes through Črni Kal. Mountain bikes are recommended for this route. Its name, loop format and recommended type of bicycle give the route a clearly defined character.
