Bernolákovo Castle was built by the Esterházy family between 1714 and 1722. The two-storey building with three wings has a U-shaped floor plan. The three wings and the clearly recognisable U-shape define the exterior appearance of the residence. It is one of the first aristocratic residences designed together with its natural surroundings. This meant that the design encompassed not only the building itself but also its landscaped setting. Following a three-year restoration, the castle was ceremonially reopened in 2017. Today, Bernolákovo Castle offers numerous activities.
Culture and history
The Church of St Stephen the King is Bernolákovo’s oldest cultural monument. Inside, there is a golden chalice dating from 1666. St Anne’s Chapel is a Baroque building commissioned by Count Esterházy in 1724 at the north-western corner of the castle park. It is currently used for religious ceremonies. Another special feature is the Esterházy Chapel, a national cultural monument commissioned by Countess Ilona Esterházyová in 1847.
The ruins of Čeklís Castle are the oldest secular building in Bernolákovo. Čeklís Castle was first mentioned in writing in 1323. Its ruins lie on a raised terrace above the Čierna voda on the western edge of Bernolákovo. The tower of Čeklís Castle once controlled a toll crossing over the Čierna voda. Today, the Várdomb water tower, a national technical cultural monument, stands on the ruins. Outside the specified hours, the water tower can be opened on weekdays by prior arrangement for groups of at least 15 to 20 people.
The Anton Bernolák Monument commemorates Anton Bernolák, a pioneer of the Slovak written language and founder of Slovenské učené tovarišstvo. It stands in front of the Roman Catholic parish house. Three stone wayside shrines, known in Slovak as Božie muky, stand directly beside the roads in Bernolákovo.
Water and cycling route
The Čierna voda is a lowland river that flows through Bernolákovo. The 4.5 km Bernolákovo–Nová Dedinka cycling route begins at a footbridge over the Čierna voda in the centre of the village. This route is part of the Senecká cyklomagistrála. The Čierna voda nature trail includes a station with information panels, benches and bicycle racks.
Golf
The Golf and Country Club Bratislava-Bernolákovo has an 18-hole course. The golf centre in Bernolákovo also has a driving range and a putting green. It is suitable for both experienced players and beginners. The Park Course at the Black & White Golf Resort Bernolákovo was the first 9-hole course built in Slovakia.
