Holiday apartment in Chorvátsky Grob: Nature, Culture and Šúr

Nature

The Šúr National Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Chorvátsky Grob. The protected area covers 991 hectares and preserves a wetland with rare flora and fauna, as well as the remains of an original marshy alder forest with peat bog.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic Church of “Christ the King” dates from 1589. It was created through the reconstruction of an older late Gothic sacred building. The church preserves a statue of the Virgin Mary from the second half of the 18th century and a monstrance from the early 16th century. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity dates from 1880.

The Chorvátska izba contains historical and ethnographic exhibits and presents examples of local craftsmanship and traditions. The Svätý Jur estate has a historical connection to the history of the village: in the mid-16th century, it settled Croatian colonists in Chorvátsky Grob.

Textile artefacts are also part of the traditional culture. A winter bridal outfit from Chorvátsky Grob dates from the beginning of the 20th century and comprises a blue wool skirt, a green bodice and a long mentieka. The tradition of making Slovenskogrobské lace continues to this day. The local folklore ensemble Chorvatanka celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2024.

Experiences

At the Čierna Voda equestrian centre, individual riding lessons with an instructor are available for children and adults. The equestrian centre also offers rides into the Šúr nature reserve. Čierna Voda can be reached by car and by public transport on bus route 630.

The “Prírodné klenoty Šúru” educational trail is 4.1 km long and has six stations. It runs mainly through Panónsky háj and ends at a road in Chorvátsky Grob, in the Čierna Voda district.
