Malinovo on the Little Danube

Water and landscape

Malinovo is surrounded on three sides by the Little Danube and its river branches, which form a large arc around the village. Strips of floodplain forest run along both banks of the river.

The Little Danube offers ideal conditions in Malinovo for fishing, water tourism, cycling and hiking.

Culture and history

Malinovo Manor stands on the foundations of a medieval water fortress with three towers and a moat. The fortress protected the crossing over the Little Danube to Žitný ostrov.

In the 17th century, Archbishop Szelepcsényi converted the manor house into a château. After a Neoclassical renovation in the 19th century, it acquired its present appearance.

The east wing of the manor house contains a chapel dating from 1677. It was built in the late medieval Renaissance style and served as a church until 1953.

An English landscape park extends around the manor house, covering just under five hectares and containing more than 200 native and foreign tree species.

The Church of St. George was built from 1869 to 1872 as a Neo-Gothic crypt chapel for the Apponyi family. It preserves the original high altar with an 18th-century statue of Saint George made of red marble.

The Juliana bell hangs in the tower of the Church of St. George. It weighs 400 kg and was cast by József Pozdech in Wiener Neustadt.

The restored sculptural group of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1739 stands in a glazed chapel in the cemetery of Malinovo.

Malinovo’s late Neoclassical belfry stands beside the small park. János Putz built it in 1862; its smaller bell is still functional today.

Educational trail and local life

The Náučný poznávací chodník educational trail in Malinovo has eight information boards and can be completed in less than an hour. The route is easy and leads through the built-up area of the municipality.

Behind the church, on the edge of the fields, stands the restored Mária Chapel. It is the final stop on the educational trail.

The local Csemadok organisation works to preserve and revive traditional folk customs.

In addition, the organisation holds around 15–18 of its own cultural and social events every year.

The traditional Maypole raising was scheduled for 30 April 2026 at 4 p.m. at the small park on Námestie 1. mája in Malinovo.

The reconstructed wooden-boat attraction Malodunajská loďka at the Žilip site is available to the youngest visitors.

Transport connections

Malinovo is served by a regional IDS-BK bus route that connects it with Bratislava via Ivanka pri Dunaji and Zálesie.
