Chalk cliffs, cave landscapes, archaeological sites and historical collections are among the defining features of Voronezh Oblast. You can shape your stay around landscapes, outdoor activities or cultural history. First decide which experiences you want to focus on during your trip; this will also give your search for a suitable holiday rental a clear direction.

Nature Reserve, Tours and Wildlife

The territory of Khopyor Nature Reserve extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky and Gribanovsky administrative districts of Voronezh Oblast. The “Legends of Khopyor” walking excursion in the reserve is five kilometres long and takes three hours. This route is closed during spring floods. The “Tour de Khopyor” cycling tour covers 26 kilometres and takes four hours. When choosing between the two tours, you can compare the distance and time required directly: five kilometres on foot in three hours or 26 kilometres by bike in four hours.

The Natural History Museum in Khopyor Nature Reserve devotes two halls to the reserve’s wildlife and its habitats. Exhibition topics include beavers, Russian desmans, water-dwelling and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, moose, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map shows the reserve. Check the museum’s visitor arrangements before your trip.

Chalk Landscapes and Archaeological Traces

The Divnogorye Museum-Reserve is known for its chalk landscapes: bizarre chalk formations stand on steep slopes, alongside large, ridged chalk ravines. Divnogorsky Canyon is about one kilometre long and up to 200 metres wide. Six ritual caves and cave complexes are carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, extending for about 8.5 kilometres. The reserve’s heritage also includes Stone Age settlements and the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress.

The “Paleolithic Workshops” recreate the Stone Age and host workshops on making stone tools. The cave churches also show how closely regional history is connected to the chalk landscape. The cave church dedicated to the Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God at Bolshiye Divy is carved into the base of a chalk cliff. Its two levels are connected by a staircase.

The route to the cave church of the Nativity of John the Baptist at Malye Divy crosses the grounds of the Divnogorye Museum-Reserve on foot and takes 30 to 40 minutes. Access to the church must be arranged with the monastery’s pilgrimage service. So allow time for this advance arrangement as well as for the walk.

The Kostenki Museum-Reserve focuses on a different area of archaeology. The Archaeological Museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The museum-reserve includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Paleolithic sites and covers an area of nine hectares.

Stud Farm, Museums and Regional Craft History

The Khrenovskoy Stud Farm lies in the southeast of Voronezh Oblast and is considered the birthplace of the Orlov Trotter and Russia’s oldest stud farm. Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov-Chesmensky founded it on 24 October 1776. A visit includes the old stables and modern horse boxes; you can also see Orlov Trotters. Tours run daily but must be arranged in advance. Confirm the date with the operator before travelling.

The Horse Breeding Museum at the stud farm displays old breeding books and the pedigree of the Orlov Trotter breed. The collection also includes horse blankets, as well as trophies and medals won by the stud farm’s horses at racetracks in Russia and abroad. Those interested in breeding history will find a different way to explore the stud farm’s history here than by visiting the stables.

Other collections highlight regional craft traditions. The Felt Boot Museum in Bobrov showcases traditional felting methods and tools, as well as the steps involved in making felt shoes. Its second hall presents historical information about felt shoes in Rus’. The carpet hall at the “Mastera” Museum of Folk Art and Crafts in Khokhol displays carpets by folk artist and hereditary carpet weaver M. Gladneva and her students.

The Dmitry Venevitinov Museum-Estate in Novozhivotinnoye is a complex of residential, utility and park buildings dating from the 17th to the early 20th century. In Ertil, the open-air museum “Village of the 17th–19th Centuries” offers activities with a historical theme: visitors can ride historic bicycles and take part in Russian games, including pillow fights, walking on stilts, riding a carousel and ring-toss. Check the current visitor arrangements before travelling.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Stay

A clear starting point can help you find a holiday rental: decide which places you want to shape your trip, then tailor your search accordingly. The reserve tours have set distances and durations; for some visits, such as tours at the stud farm or access to the cave church at Malye Divy, advance arrangements are part of the planning.
