Borisoglebsk offers two different ways to explore the city’s history: a walk lasting several hours and memorial complexes with clearly stated dedications. If you want to discover the town through walking or remembrance, you can choose what to focus on accordingly.

A themed trail and two memorial sites

The year-round walking route “Moy Borissoglebsk – moya istoriya” in Borisoglebsk is seven kilometres long; the stated duration is six hours. This makes it possible to plan the route as a longer activity.

The “Chkalovtsy – Geroi Otechestva” memorial complex, opened in 2015, is dedicated to courageous graduates. Those honoured graduated from the “Borisoglebskoye Vyssheye Voyennoye Aviatsionnoye Uchilishche” school and received the title Hero of the Soviet Union or Hero of Russia. The “Afghanskaya Zvezda” complex commemorates internationalist soldiers who lost their lives serving in Afghanistan and other local conflicts. The memorial sites thus focus on award-winning graduates of an aviation school and those killed in various deployments.

If this history shapes your stay, you can focus your search for a holiday apartment on Borisoglebsk. The themed trail and memorial sites offer different reasons to visit: a longer walk or time to explore the historical dedications.

Nature and history in Voronezh Oblast

Voronezh Oblast offers other nature and culture themes for a broader trip. In the Khopyor Nature Reserve, the protected area extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky and Gribanovsky administrative districts. Two routes differ in their mode of travel and the time required: the “Legendy Khopra” walking tour is five kilometres long, takes three hours and is closed during spring floods. The “Tur de Khopyor” cycling tour covers 26 kilometres; its stated duration is four hours.

The Khopyor Nature Reserve also has a natural history museum. Its two halls showcase the reserve’s wildlife and habitats. Exhibits include beavers, Russian desmans, water-dwelling and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, elk, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map provides an additional view of the reserve. If you plan to visit the museum, check the visitor arrangements before your trip.

The “Divnogorye” Museum-Reserve is known for its chalk landscapes, steep slopes and ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorskiy Canyon is about one kilometre long and up to 200 metres wide. Its historical heritage includes Stone Age settlement sites, the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress, and six cult caves and cave complexes. These six cult caves and cave complexes are carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers and extend for about 8.5 kilometres. The Stone Age is recreated at the “Paleoliticheskiye masterskiye”, where workshops on making stone tools are held.

Archaeology is another area of focus in Voronezh Oblast: at the “Kostenki” Museum-Reserve, the archaeological museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The reserve includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Palaeolithic sites. The landscape, crafts and archaeological history thus offer different themes for planning a trip beyond Borisoglebsk.
