Liski: Local History Museum, City Park and Distinctive Monuments
Accommodation in Liski
Liski combines a local history museum in a historic building with a city park, a distinctive cathedral and public monuments. There is also Lake Bogatoe, a former channel of the Don. These attractions offer different focuses: museum and architecture on the one hand, and parks, avenues and paths on the other. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Liski, these interests can help you decide what kind of stay you want.
Local History Museum and Art
The Liski Local History Museum opened on September 9, 2001. It is housed in a former railway school building constructed in the late 19th century. Its seven halls are named “Priroda,” “Dvoryansko-kupecheskiy ugolok,” “Arkheologiya,” “Ot istokov do XX veka,” “Vek XX – XXI,” “Informatsionnyy zal” and “Masterskaya podvizhnichestva.” There are also two exhibition halls, the Vasiliy Pavlovich Krivoruchko Art Gallery and the four-storey Shatrovaya Tower.
On display at the Local History Museum are a fragment of a Scythian cauldron, tiles from a mosque dating to the Golden Horde period, a runic inscription from the Mayatskoye hillfort and an Old Russian vessel from the 12th century. The art gallery began operating in 2011; its permanent exhibition is supplemented with works by contemporary artists from Voronezh Oblast. Since 2018, the Shatrovaya Tower has housed a Hall of Fame. It includes photographs of recipients of the Book of Honour, information about Liski residents who were Heroes of Socialist Labour, and the exhibition “Liskinskiy komsomol i ego pervye litsa.”
Cathedral, Park and Avenues
The main cathedral stands on Revolution Square. Built in the 2010s, it consists of two churches and is one of the largest cathedrals in Voronezh Oblast. The building includes a library, a lecture hall and an exhibition gallery featuring Orthodox, art and ethnographic exhibitions. This means a visit to the city centre can also be viewed from an architectural and cultural perspective.
Liski City Park was renovated in the 2000s and covers 16.5 hectares. Its features include a pine forest, a fountain, amusement rides and large park sculptures: a bee, a giraffe and several dinosaurs. The children’s railway opened in 1989 and was modernised in the mid-2010s. Its circular route is 1,600 metres long and has one station, “Zadorinka.”
Titov Street begins at the city park and is a leafy boulevard known as “Bolshaya Liskinskaya alleya.” Its oldest avenue was laid out in 1970; a monument to Lenin stands there. Continuing from it is the Alleya imeni 80-letiya VLKSM. A monument commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Komsomol was erected there in 2018. These historical landmarks give the avenues a history of their own, distinct from the exhibition spaces of the Local History Museum.
Monuments and Waterside Walks
The steam locomotive “Fedya” (F20) stands in the station forecourt. It was built between 1931 and 1941 and named after Felix Dzerzhinsky. Also in the station forecourt is a column with the “Angel-khranitel.” Another monument, “Lenin na kolesakh,” is two metres high and was erected in 1932 to mark the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution. The “Liska” monument on an avenue was created by sculptor Ivan Dikunov; it is considered a symbol of Liski.
Gorky Square has a walking area and a promenade. Various events take place at its amphitheatre. The waterside path at Lake Bogatoe can be reached by descending a staircase and following wooden walkways through an alder grove. The lake is a former channel of the Don and stretches for almost seven kilometres.
When choosing a holiday rental in Liski, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the museum, art and monuments or on the park, avenues and walking paths. The places described here offer different themes, from historical collections and architecture to green spaces and waterside paths.
