Pavlovsk: City History and Churches
Accommodation in Pavlovsk
Pavlovsk combines a significant history with distinctive architectural features. The town is ideal for travellers who want to discover historic buildings not merely as a backdrop, but also as a way to explore a city’s history.
City History and Churches in Pavlovsk
Pavlovsk has official status as a historic city of the Russian Federation and is classified as a historic city of federal significance in the second category. There are 43 architectural monuments within the city, including seven of federal significance. The city’s classification and the significance of individual architectural monuments are two different aspects of its historic heritage.
Another chapter in the city’s history is connected with Peter I: he founded Pavlovsk as a fortified town and shipyard. The shipyard played an important role in the development of the Russian Navy. The town’s urban heritage is thus linked to a history that extends beyond architecture.
Two churches illustrate different architectural forms. The Church of the Intercession was consecrated on 6 February 1786. It is built in the early Russian style and has a ship-shaped floor plan. The Church of Our Lady of Kazan was built between 1764 and 1776 on the site of a wooden church dating from 1711. Its Russian-style interior is complemented by Baroque elements; its floor plan is T-shaped.
The different floor plans offer a practical way to compare the two buildings: the Church of the Intercession is ship-shaped, while the Church of Our Lady of Kazan is T-shaped. Their construction histories also set them apart: one was consecrated in 1786, while the other replaced an older wooden church on the same site. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Pavlovsk, deciding what you want to focus on during your trip can help you plan: would you like to concentrate on Pavlovsk’s history, or also explore other themes in Voronezh Oblast?

The nature museum in the Khopyor Reserve presents the reserve’s wildlife and habitats in two halls. Exhibits include beavers, the Russian desman, aquatic and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, moose, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map of the reserve complements the exhibition. The Divnogorye Museum-Reserve offers a different landscape, known for its chalk terrain, unusual chalk cliffs on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorskiy Canyon is about one kilometre long and up to 200 metres wide. The reserve’s heritage also includes Stone Age settlements, the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress and ritual cave complexes.
Six ritual caves and cave complexes lie in the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, extending over about 8.5 kilometres. The “Paleoliticheskiye masterskiye” recreates the Stone Age and hosts workshops on making stone tools. The walk to the cave Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Malyye Divy leads across the grounds of the Museum-Reserve and takes 30 to 40 minutes.
