Nature Routes in Voronezh Oblast

In the wider destination of Voronezh Oblast, the territory of the Khopyor Nature Reserve extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky and Gribanovsky districts. Two halls at the reserve’s Nature Museum showcase the area’s wildlife and habitats. Exhibition themes include beavers, Russian desmans, water-dwelling and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, elk, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map complements the exhibition. Check the visitor arrangements before your visit.

For active trip planning, two routes there can be compared by their stated length and duration: the “Legendy Khopra” walking excursion is 5 km long and takes three hours; it is closed during the spring floods. The “Tur de Khopyor” cycling tour covers 26 km and takes four hours. This offers a shorter walking route and a longer cycling tour, each with its own stated duration.

Chalk Landscapes and Early History

The “Divnogorye” Museum-Reserve is known for its chalk landscapes, which include unusual chalk cliffs on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorskiy Canyon is about one kilometre long and up to 200 metres wide. Six religious caves and cave complexes are carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, extending for about 8.5 km. The reserve’s historical sites also include Stone Age settlements and the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress.

The “Paleoliticheskie masterskie” recreates the Stone Age and hosts workshops on making stone tools. The cave church of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Malye Divy offers another way to connect with history: the walking path there crosses the grounds of the Museum-Reserve and takes 30 to 40 minutes. Access to the church must be arranged with the monastery’s pilgrimage service.

The “Kostenki” Museum-Reserve combines an archaeological museum with an extensive archaeological site. The museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The area covers 9 hectares and includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Paleolithic sites. Those interested in the earliest settlements will find both a specific archaeological building and numerous sites within the protected zones.

Horse Breeding and Its History

In the southeast of Voronezh Oblast lies the Khrenovskoy Stud Farm, regarded as the birthplace of the Orlov Trotter and the oldest stud farm in Russia. Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov-Chesmensky founded it on 24 October 1776. Visitors can see Orlov Trotters and experience the old stables as well as modern horse stalls. The Horse Breeding Museum offers insights into breeding history through old studbooks and the Orlov Trotter pedigree. Exhibits also include horse blankets, as well as cups and medals won by the stud farm’s horses at racetracks in Russia and abroad. Guided tours take place daily but must be arranged in advance; confirm the arrangements with the operator before your trip.
