Sloboda is a destination for anyone interested in the history of horse breeding. The Khrenovsky Stud Farm is at its heart: the museum, horses and architecture give the place a distinctive theme. Here, the history of the Orlov Trotter is reflected in studbooks and pedigrees, as well as in the stud farm complex and its exhibits.

Horse-Breeding History and Architecture in Sloboda

The halls of the Horse-Breeding Museum display old studbooks and pedigrees of Orlov Trotters. Horse blankets add to the collection, while cups and medals commemorate victories won by the stud farm’s horses at racetracks in Russia and abroad. Breeding lines and racing history are presented side by side. Anyone interested in the development of the breed will find both written records and trophies here.

The horse-breeding complex itself is also part of history: it was built to the design of architect D. I. Gilyardi and is a monument of Russian architecture. In Voronezh Oblast, the Khrenovsky Stud Farm is regarded as the birthplace of the Orlov Trotter and as Russia’s oldest stud farm. Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov-Chesmensky founded it on 24 October 1776. In Sloboda, the museum’s exhibits are thus set alongside a stud-farm tradition that dates back to the 18th century.

On a guided tour, visitors can see old horse stables and modern stables, as well as Orlov Trotters. Tours of the Horse-Breeding Museum can be arranged by telephone; please coordinate your visit in advance. If the stud farm is the main focus of your trip, Sloboda is a specific location to use when looking for a holiday rental.

More Nature and Culture in Voronezh Oblast

Beyond the subject of horses, Voronezh Oblast also offers a range of nature and cultural experiences. At Khopyor Nature Reserve, you can choose between two tours with different durations and distances: the “Legendy Khopra” walking tour is 5 kilometres long and takes three hours. The “Tur de Khopyor” cycling tour covers 26 kilometres and takes four hours. The walking tour is shorter and takes less time; it is closed during the spring floods.

The nature museum at Khopyor Nature Reserve displays the reserve’s wildlife and habitats in two halls. Topics include beavers, the Russian desman, aquatic and predatory birds, wild boar, elk, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map depicts the reserve. Check the museum’s visiting arrangements before travelling.

The Divnogorye Museum-Reserve in Voronezh Oblast offers a different kind of landscape. Its chalk landscapes include unusual rock formations on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorskiy Canyon is about one kilometre long and up to 200 metres wide. The cultural heritage also includes six ritual caves and cave complexes carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers. They extend for about 8.5 kilometres.

At the Kostenki Museum-Reserve, archaeology meets an unusual building: the Archaeological Museum building completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The museum-reserve covers 9 hectares and includes 25 protected zones, with about 60 Upper Palaeolithic sites. This offers a distinct focus when choosing a holiday rental: Sloboda for the stud farm and its horse-breeding history, or other interests across the wider Voronezh Oblast.
