Panino brings together religious history, remembrance and local festival themes. These include the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a monument to the black earth and Heroes’ Alley. Events add their own time-related context to this picture. When planning, it is worth distinguishing local memorial sites from festivals, whose dates you should check before planning a trip around them.

Church, Monument and Remembrance in Panino

The upper church of the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Panino was solemnly consecrated in 2007 by Metropolitan Sergiy of Voronezh and Borisoglebsk. Another memorial site is the monument to the black earth, erected in 2013 and considered unique in the world. Heroes’ Alley features 32 busts dedicated to the district’s heroes. Together, these sites span the history of the consecration, the black earth and the commemoration of the district’s heroes.

Events also offer insight into Panino’s local themes. The first Kvass Festival was held on June 25, 2011, at the Novy Pond in the floodplain of the Matryonka River; more than 3,000 guests attended the inaugural event. According to the festival description, from 2011 onward it was held regularly every two years. If you want to plan your trip around it, check for a specific date in advance.

The “Paninsky Rozhdestvensky Gus” fair is associated with the Christmas holidays and Panino’s central square; goose fights are mentioned as a special attraction. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with the fair, check beforehand whether it is currently being held.

Nature and Excursions in Voronezh Oblast

As a wider travel destination, Voronezh Oblast also includes the Khopyor Nature Reserve. Its territory extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky and Gribanovsky administrative districts. Two tours differ in both mode of transport and time required: the 5 km “Legends of Khopyor” walking tour takes three hours, while the 26 km “Tour de Khopyor” cycling tour takes four hours. The walking route is closed during the spring floods, so take this seasonal restriction into account when planning.

The nature museum at the Khopyor Reserve presents the protected area’s wildlife and habitats in two halls. The exhibits cover beavers, the Russian desman, aquatic and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, elk, fallow deer and red deer. A large relief map of the reserve is also on display. It is advisable to check visitor arrangements before visiting the museum.

Another landscape in Voronezh Oblast is showcased by the Divnogorye Museum-Reserve, known for its chalk scenery. This includes unusual chalk formations on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorsky Canyon is about one kilometer long and up to 200 meters wide. The reserve’s cultural heritage includes six cult caves and cave complexes. Carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers, they extend for about 8.5 km.

Choose the Right Focus

When looking for a vacation rental in Panino, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip. If you are mainly interested in the church, the earth monument, Heroes’ Alley or the events, Panino itself is the main destination. The Khopyor Nature Reserve and Divnogorye, on the other hand, are part of the wider Voronezh Oblast and offer a regional framework for planning. Include these destinations in your itinerary and check their respective locations separately.
