Voronezh brings together maritime history, theater, and literature. The historic Devichok district also tells the story of the city. Voronezh Oblast has further regional highlights, ranging from nature and archaeology to horse breeding.

Cultural History in Voronezh

The museum ship “Goto Predestinatsiya” is a working historical replica of the Russian Navy’s first ship of the line, from the time of Peter I. Theatergoers will find the Voronezh State Opera and Ballet Theater at 7 Lenin Square. It is described as the only musical theater in the Central Black Earth Region. The two venues offer different highlights: naval history at one, and musical theater in a special regional role at the other.

An exhibition at the Voronezh Regional Literary Museum covers the lives and work of Koltsov, Bunin, Ertel, Platonov, Mandelstam, and Zhigulin. The exhibition “Teatr i vremya” at the Museum of the Voronezh State Academic Theater offers a different perspective: it traces the history of Voronezh’s oldest theater from its founding in 1787 to the present day. The foyer of the “Shut” Puppet Theater also houses a theater puppet museum, described as the second-largest in Russia. Together, the three venues take visitors from literature through theater history to puppetry.

The Diorama Museum is devoted to the history of the Russian Navy, the Air Force, and the Airborne Forces. If your stay includes more than one cultural theme, you can consider this military-history focus alongside the literary and theater venues, while keeping in mind that the subjects are distinct.

If you would like to include a walk in your itinerary, Koltsov Square has historical significance: since the end of the 19th century, it has been a popular place for walks and relaxation among Voronezh residents. The Devichok district developed around the Alekseyevo-Akatov Monastery at the end of the 17th century. It is considered a district worth visiting, where the atmosphere of the old city has been preserved. The square thus represents a long tradition of local recreation, while Devichok is a historic district that has grown over time.

Nature and History in Voronezh Oblast

The territory of the Khopyor Nature Reserve extends across the Novokhopersky, Povorinsky, and Gribanovsky administrative districts in Voronezh Oblast. Two tours differ in distance and duration: the “Legendy Khopra” walking excursion is 5 km long and takes three hours; it is closed during the spring flood. The “Tur de Khoper” cycling tour covers 26 km and takes four hours.

The Nature Museum in the Khopyor Reserve has two halls showcasing the reserve’s wildlife and habitats. Exhibits cover beavers, Russian desmans, aquatic and predatory birds, as well as wild boar, moose, fallow deer, and red deer. A large relief map complements the animal displays. Check how visits to the museum are organized before your trip.

The “Divnogorye” Museum-Reserve is known for its chalk landscapes, including unusually shaped chalk cliffs on steep slopes and large, ridge-like chalk ravines. Divnogorsky Canyon is about one kilometer long and up to 200 meters wide. The area’s cultural heritage is also significant: the reserve includes Stone Age settlements, the ruins of the medieval Mayatskaya Fortress, and six ritual caves and cave complexes. These were carved into the chalk massif on the right bank of the Tikhaya Sosna and Don rivers and extend for about 8.5 km. The “Paleolithic Workshops” recreate the Stone Age, with workshops on making stone tools.

At the “Kostenki” Museum-Reserve, the building of the Archaeological Museum completely covers a Stone Age settlement site. The reserve covers 9 hectares and includes 25 protected zones with about 60 Upper Paleolithic archaeological sites. These figures convey two scales at once: a museum building over a settlement site, and a larger protected area with numerous archaeological sites.

Another regional highlight is the Khrenovskoy Stud Farm, considered the birthplace of the Orlov Trotter and the oldest stud farm in Russia. Count Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov-Chesmensky founded it on October 24, 1776; it is located in the southeast of Voronezh Oblast. The Horse Breeding Museum displays old breeding records, the pedigree of the Orlov Trotter breed, and horse blankets, cups, and medals won by the stud farm’s horses at racetracks in Russia and abroad. The stud farm has old stables and modern horse boxes, and visitors can see Orlov Trotters. Tours are held daily but must be arranged in advance. Confirm the arrangement with the operator before arriving.
