Evora is a destination for anyone who wants to combine history, landscapes and vibrant culture. The historic centre of Évora has been shaped by more than twenty centuries of history. Historic Centre and Routes through Évora

Évora is best explored on foot through the narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses. The Museu do Fresco hosts thematic exhibitions on the history and culture of the region every year. Its building was the most refined and representative civil building in old Monsaraz. In Vila Viçosa, the Paço Ducal impresses with a 110-metre-long Mannerist façade completely clad in marble from the region. During a visit, you can see collections of paintings, sculptures, furniture, tapestries, ceramics and goldsmiths’ work.

The Museu do Mármore de Vila Viçosa provides information about Portuguese marble and the extraction and processing of this natural stone. The wine region of Reguengos de Monsaraz offers a different focus: it comprises 11 wineries, 10 of which offer wine tourism for visitors. In São Pedro do Corval, you can watch master potters shape clay on the potter’s wheel and learn about their knowledge and experience. The town has more than two dozen permanently operating potteries and is considered Portugal’s largest pottery centre.

Experience History and Discover Regional Cuisine

The Fortaleza de Juromenha preserves traces of Roman settlement as well as parts of an Arab defensive structure with a wall, gate and towers made of Islamic rammed earth. The fortress is situated above the Guadiana River. For a trip involving different interests, this historic site can be combined with other cultural destinations, so that every day does not have to follow the same rhythm.

Cuisine is also part of the region’s character. Traditional dishes from the area around Reguengos de Monsaraz include Açorda alentejana, Migas, Silarcas, Favada and Ensopado de borrego. The visitor restaurant at Esporão on Herdade do Esporão offers seasonal terroir cuisine focusing on Alentejan and Portuguese products.

Fluviário de Mora is Europe’s first large freshwater aquarium. It combines scientific, cultural and leisure functions with an educational and environmental mission. This adds another excursion destination to the historic, culinary and landscape experiences of Evora.
