In Alcáçovas, the making of traditional livestock bells is a defining cultural theme. The town is considered Portugal’s most important centre for making chocalhos. Craftsmanship, local history and architecture offer a range of reasons to visit, from the Museu do Chocalho to the Paço dos Henriques and Igreja Matriz do Salvador. The Feira do Chocalho and the Rota do Chocalho are also connected with local tradition.

Chocalhos: Craftsmanship and Local History

The tradition of chocalho-making was inscribed on UNESCO’s lists as intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding on 1 December 2015. The nomination was submitted by Turismo do Alentejo, the Câmara Municipal de Viana do Alentejo and the Junta de Freguesia de Alcáçovas, among others. This makes bell-making not merely an exhibit, but an important part of the town’s cultural identity.

The Museu do Chocalho grew out of the workshop of bell-maker João Chibeles Penetra and comprises more than 5,800 bells. If you are travelling with children, you can use the collection as an opportunity to learn more together about local craftsmanship. An important point for planning: the museum is currently not open to the public; visits are possible only by prior appointment.

The Feira do Chocalho also puts chocalho-making and Cante Alentejano, both defining elements of Alcáçovas’s identity, centre stage. It is an annual four-day event held on the weekend of the fourth Sunday in July. It features crafts, trade and food, as well as concerts, an agricultural exhibition, other exhibitions, equestrian and bullfighting activities, and sport. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, you can use these dates to guide your travel plans.

Paço dos Henriques and Igreja Matriz

The Paço dos Henriques combines historical significance with present-day functions. It is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público; the classification was granted in 1993. Since 4 September 2021, the building has housed the permanent exhibition “Paço dos Henriques: História e Memória”. Alcáçovas’s tourist information office is also located there. For visitors interested in local history, a protected building, an exhibition and a tourist information point all come together in one place.

The Igreja Matriz do Salvador was founded in 1308 and was formerly called Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Alcáçovas. It has eight chapels, including the pantheon of the Henriques de Trastâmara. The main chapel is distinguished by a stone coffered vault, polychrome azulejos and a Mannerist altarpiece that is gilded and polychrome. These details give art-interested travellers specific features to look out for when exploring the church.

Shell Decoration and Routes Around Alcáçovas

The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Jardim das Conchas are considered a unique example of the Alentejo’s cultural diversity. Their design uses around 26 types of shell and depicts a water cycle from the fountain, through the aqueduct, to the pool. The interplay of shells and water makes this place a distinctive counterpoint to the bell-making and architectural themes of the town centre.

If you would also like to plan a hike during your stay, the Rota do Chocalho is a walking trail created by the Junta de Freguesia de Alcáçovas. Another destination nearby is the Convento Nossa Senhora da Esperança, about three kilometres from Alcáçovas. It was built over a 15th-century hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça. The convent remains a place of worship and pilgrimage and is dedicated to its patron saint, Nossa Senhora da Esperança.

For travel by road, the N257 is one of the routes serving Alcáçovas. When choosing your holiday apartment, you might consider whether you want to devote your stay mainly to cultural attractions, the Feira do Chocalho, or a combination of visits to local sights and a hike. This way, your choice of travel dates and accommodation location can reflect the experiences that matter most to you.
