Reguengos de Monsaraz: Megaliths, Wine and Alqueva

Reguengos de Monsaraz combines the broad Alentejo plain with the waters of the Alqueva Reservoir. The municipality thus brings together landscapes, millennia-old culture and regional culinary experiences. Hot, dry summers and short, rainy winters shape the Mediterranean climate. The municipality encompasses more than 1,500 archaeological sites left by prehistoric inhabitants who lived there more than 6,000 years ago. There are 276 megalithic monuments in total; this concentration is considered one of the largest in Europe. The Cromeleque dos Perdigões is a particularly vivid destination. Its six menhirs were erected between the beginning of the 4th and the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods.

The Perdigões archaeological site lies about 2 kilometres northeast of Reguengos de Monsaraz, at the western end of the Álamo Valley. It comprises a complex system of ditches, multifunctional areas with settlement spaces, a necropolis and a megalithic enclosure. Monsaraz also tells the story of a long history of settlement: its archaeological traces range from prehistoric periods to the Iron Age; later, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Mozarabs and Jews lived here.

At the Museu do Fresco, you can see a fresco in the courtroom dating from the 15th century, which was rediscovered in 1958. Because of its secular subject, it is considered unique in Portugal. Since 2010, the museum has hosted annual themed exhibitions. Other cultural stops include the Casa da Inquisição, with rooms dedicated to Christianity, Judaism and Islam, as well as to the history of Monsaraz’s Jewish population. In Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Igreja Matriz de Santo António was inaugurated on 25 August 1912.

Hiking with Different Trail Profiles

Reguengos de Monsaraz has four signposted walking trails with information boards in Portuguese and English. The trails are circular and can be walked year-round. This allows you to plan active days in different ways without having to commit to a single trail length.

• The PR1 Escritas de Pedra e Cal in Monsaraz is a moderately difficult trail 10.8 kilometres long. There is also a 1.4-kilometre side trail. The route takes three to four hours and starts and ends at the square beside the Ermida de São João Batista.
• The PR3 À Descoberta do Pinhal in Corval is a moderately difficult, seven-kilometre trail lasting two to three hours.
• The Rota de São Marcos do Campo offers easy circular hiking options of 7.8 or 6.3 kilometres in the area of the União de Freguesias de Campo e Campinho.

Anyone wishing to combine archaeological destinations with a longer excursion can consider the Rota do Megalitismo de Reguengos. It runs through the landscape of the Vale do Álamo between the large Perdigões enclosure in the west and the Guadiana in the east. Along the route, you can visit eight dolmens, four menhirs or stelae, and one cromlech, Xerez. The route is approximately 62 kilometres long, plus 47 kilometres to San Blás.

Wine, Pottery and Regional Specialities

The Reguengos de Monsaraz wine region encompasses 11 wineries, 10 of which offer wine tourism for visitors. At Herdade do Esporão, you can visit vineyards, the winery, an olive grove, the olive oil mill, gardens and an ampelography field. Trails also run through the estate, allowing you to explore its biodiversity. The 120-hectare reservoir area of Herdade do Esporão includes wetland margins and riverside vegetation and serves as a refuge for biodiversity.

A special regional tradition can be experienced in São Pedro do Corval. There are more than two dozen continuously operating potteries; the village is considered Portugal’s largest pottery centre and one of the largest on the Iberian Peninsula. Visitors can watch clay being shaped on the potter’s wheel and learn about the potter’s knowledge and experience. The Casa do Barro Interpretation Centre provides additional insights into pottery and clay. Characteristic handicrafts also include the Mantas de Reguengos, which preserve patterns of Arab origin and are woven from pure sheep’s wool.

The region’s menus include Alentejo bread with olives, goat’s or sheep’s cheese, and black pork products. Regional dishes include Açorda, wild asparagus migas with eggs, Silarcas, Favada, pork migas, lamb stew and game dishes. Adega José de Sousa combines a traditional winery with 114 clay amphorae and two vats for treading grapes with a modern winery containing 44 stainless-steel tanks for red and white wines.

Water, Stars and Choosing Your Accommodation

A variety of experiences can be enjoyed around Alqueva. The Centro Náutico de Monsaraz has a boat mooring area and a slipway. The Centro Náutico e Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz offers a children’s area and a picnic park for families. In the evening, the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in the village of Cumeada is another option. It has state-of-the-art telescopes for solar and astronomical observation. A stargazing session lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and includes guided observation with high-quality optical telescopes. Sessions take place from Tuesday to Saturday only with advance booking; each evening, there is one session in Portuguese and one in English.
