Castle, walls and views over the plain

Castelo de Évora-Monte stands at one of the highest points of the Serra de Ossa. From the terrace of the Torre do Castelo de Évora Monte, the view extends from an altitude of more than 500 metres across the expansive Alentejo peneplain. Along the medieval walls, you can see numerous whitewashed villages, small towns and cities. This makes it easy to shape a stay around a contrast between historic details and expansive landscapes.

The walls of Évora Monte were built in 1306 and preserve four pointed-arch gates dating from the town's foundation. The fortified Paço Ducal has four cylindrical towers forming a square ground plan and is decorated with stone knots. The Torre, or Paço Ducal, is considered a unique Portuguese example of late Manueline-style transitional military architecture. Visiting hours for the Torre, or Paço Ducal, are 09:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30 in both summer and winter.

Churches and stories from Évora Monte

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also known as Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, has two Gothic pointed-arch doorways and a rectangular floor plan with three naves. It was the first church of Vila Évora Monte; the first known mention dates from 1271. Frescoes were recently discovered in the church depicting an episode about Saint Anthony and the Miracle of Padua, in which his father is saved from the gallows. The Church of São Pedro already existed at the foot of Évoramonte in 1320.

Casa da Convenção is also part of the town's history: an agreement between Absolutists and Liberals that ended the Portuguese Civil War was signed in this house. The historic Celeiro Comum building now houses a shop selling regional products.

Hiking, regional products and special dates

Andar a Monte offers four established hiking routes. One runs within the walls, while the others are in the area around Castelo de Evoramonte. In addition, the Caminhada da Maior Sopa de Tomate do Mundo includes a route of around 7 km through Évora Monte's rural roads and footpaths. Along the way, it passes, among other places, the panoramic swing site at Alpedriches, the Coração frame, colourful stairways, the Castelo and the town sign.

At the seventh edition of this Caminhada, a communal lunch with Alentejo tomato soup was planned after the hike; the stated target was 1,000 portions. The historic centre of Évora Monte also hosts the Encontro Nacional de Olaria, which brings together leading Portuguese pottery masters from 18 to 20 September.
