Vimieiro offers several ways to explore the rural history of the Alentejo: through an exhibition on agriculture and everyday life, historical buildings and paths through the cultural landscape. There is also a traditional sweet closely associated with the town. This gives you different options for planning your trip, whether you prefer culture and local history or a route through the surrounding countryside.

Rural life at the Centro Interpretativo do Mundo Rural

The permanent exhibition at the Centro Interpretativo do Mundo Rural explores the agricultural cycles of the Alentejo, as well as the activities, customs and ways of life of the rural area. Photographs are displayed alongside agricultural tools, equipment and utensils. The different types of exhibits give the exhibition a concrete perspective on its themes: images and everyday objects both play a part in its portrayal of rural life.

The centre preserves the historical memory of the rural society of the Alentejo from the final decades of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. In this way, the exhibition connects its look at agricultural practices with a longer period of social history. General tours covering all the themes of the permanent exhibition are available, as well as themed tours focusing on specific subjects or a temporary exhibition. If you would like to plan a tour, it is best to check the arrangements before your trip.

Churches, a palace and a work in Alentejo marble

The Igreja do Espírito Santo do Vimieiro is associated with an old inn or hospital dedicated to the same patron saint; the institution was in existence by 1320 at the latest. Another historic site is the Misericórdia de Vimieiro: it was founded in 1550 and built its church in the second half of the 16th century. These dates refer to different historical contexts and should not be combined into a single building history.

The Palácio dos Condes de Vimieiro was built between 1770 and 1790, replacing an earlier residence. Another historical landmark is the Fonte e Obelisco do Vimieiro, an artistic work dating from 1774 and made of Alentejo marble. The buildings are associated with different dates; in the case of the fountain and obelisk, the specific year of creation and the material used are additional details. If you are interested in regional architectural history, you can consider these sites in light of their different dates and associations.

A route through the rural landscape

The longer version of the Rota das Capelas do Vimieiro follows unpaved country roads and old sections of track. Along the way, fields, pastures and Montado woodlands alternate. The landscape is therefore quite different from the historical sites in town: rather than exhibits and architectural history, this route focuses on cultivated land and woodland. If you include both in your plans, you can appreciate culture and landscape as different sides of Vimieiro without needing to follow a particular order.

Cavacas do Vimieiro: a local sweet

Cavacas do Vimieiro are another local speciality that connects Vimieiro with its own tradition. This sweet is considered traditional in the town and has been registered as a national brand. It adds a culinary dimension to the town’s architectural and agricultural history, without requiring an additional excursion. For travellers interested in regional food as well as culture and landscape, the name offers a concrete point of reference.

When looking for holiday accommodation in Vimieiro, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the history of the churches and palace, the exhibition and its different tour formats, or the longer route through fields, pastures and Montado woodlands.
