The Centro Interpretativo do Tapete de Arraiolos is a municipally supported museum institution and a permanent museum centre serving the community. Its focus is on the history, origins and influences of Arraiolos carpets. The exhibition also explains the traditional production process, the techniques and materials used, and the artistic, material and technical development of these carpets. This makes it possible to experience the local tradition from several perspectives: as a craft, as decorative art and as part of the region’s ethnography.

For planning your visit, the centre’s regular opening hours are useful: it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00. In addition, “O Tapete está na Rua” offers a different way to engage with carpet culture. This cultural event, supported by the Município de Arraiolos, includes an exhibition of Arraiolos carpets. The exhibition takes place in the historic centre of Arraiolos and showcases local handicrafts, gastronomy and other local products.

Historic Sites and Sacred Art

The Castelo de Arraiolos is protected as a national monument. It includes the walls of the former settlement and the Paços dos Alcaides. This makes it a key site for gaining a particularly vivid understanding of Arraiolos’ historic character. Another prominent monument is the Pelourinho de Arraiolos. It was probably erected following the granting of Arraiolos’ second charter by Manuel I in 1511. This cautious dating remains part of its history.

The religious buildings also provide distinct themes for a cultural day. The Convento de São Francisco and its adjoining cemetery are classified as IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público, a Property of Public Interest. The convent was founded in 1612. Inside, there is a gilded and polychrome high altar, as well as wall frescoes depicting scenes from the Old Testament. In the Igreja da Misericórdia de Arraiolos, the nave and transept are decorated with tiled panels depicting the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The Misericórdia de Arraiolos was founded on 14 April 1524; the Hospital was affiliated with it immediately afterwards.
