Along the way, it leads to the Castelo de Portel, the Capela de Santo António and the Igreja do Espírito Santo. The Igreja da Misericórdia is a 17th-century Baroque church next to the wall of Vila Velha. The Capela de Santo António has a Baroque interior with a sgraffito-decorated dome and tile panels from the second half of the 17th century. In the Igreja do Espírito Santo, a ribbed vault meets a two-zone high altar retable in Baroque and Rococo forms.

The history of the Igreja do Espírito Santo goes back even further: it was established in the second half of the 13th century as a hostel with an adjoining church and became a royal hospital in the 17th century. The present Igreja Matriz was built between 1754 and 1766, replacing a medieval parish church within the fortified town. The Ermida e Igreja de S. Pedro is also worth visiting for its furnishings, including gilded Baroque altar retables and a wall painting on the dome of the main chapel. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Socorro is located in the church of the former Convento de São Paulo and is considered an example of regional Mannerist architecture.

The S. Pedro – Centro de Interpretação da Natureza e do Montado is located 4 kilometres from Portel at the highest point of the Serra, at an altitude of 422 metres. It is dedicated to the Montado landscape and the Serra de Portel and has equipment for astronomical observation with telescopes. The Ermida e Igreja de S. Pedro is also located at the highest point of the Serra, 4 kilometres from the village of Portel.

At the Pavilhão Temático – A Bolota, the Montado landscape is presented through the five senses. Four themed rooms focus on handicrafts, cork, cultural heritage and sensory perception; there is also a shop. The Museu Maria Fernanda Toscano Rico presents the estate of the painter from Portel in chronological order in the building of the former hospital. Another local perspective is offered by the Museu do Medronho, with an exhibition, shop, tasting counter and distillation area. The exhibition explains the medronho plant, its fruit, its life cycle and the distillation process.

Water Activities and Landscapes around Alqueva
