The Eifel maars are described as European Fauna-Flora Habitat areas with biologically diverse habitats for rare animals and plants. The maars around Nerdlen are described as water-filled volcanic craters with natural bathing areas and boat tours; Daun is home to a volcano museum.

Culture and History

The settlement history of Nerdlen dates back to the Middle Ages, around 1400. At that time, farmers settled at the confluence of the Sarmersbach and Lieser rivers. The place name Nerdlen developed from “Zu den Erlen” via “Nerlen”.

The Antonius Chapel stands in the village center. It continues to be used for Masses, Liturgy of the Word services, and rosaries. After a village fire in 1893, it was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1898.

Hiking and Cycling

The Struth Circular Trail leads through Neichen, Beinhausen, Afelskreuz, Sarmersbach, Nerdlen, and Kradenbach. Nerdlen is located close to the start of the Lieser Trail. The shorter Struth Circular Trail is approximately 16 km long and runs through forests and fields on mostly well-maintained paths with panoramic views; it can also be explored by mountain bike or trekking bike.

The Kleeland Circular Trail leads through the forest near the Hörscheider Chapel, returns to Nerdlen, and continues via the Eulenbrücke bridge outside the municipality. The Struth Circular Trail includes a rest area with distant views of Hilgerath Parish Church. The HeimatSpur Kleeland Circular Trail starts and ends at the community center, Bergstraße 1, in Sarmersbach.
