Mehren: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mehren showcases its landscape directly through its network of paths: The hiking trails begin at the information pavilion next to the church. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Mehren can then continue searching for accommodation. The trails range from approximately 2–4 km around the village to around 15 km through forests, meadows and fields. Mehren also has motorway connections via the A1 and A48.

Nature

The network of paths provides access to the Daun Maars nature reserves. Mürmes and Sangweiher are named as destinations in wetland areas and as resting areas for migratory birds. The neighbouring Schalkenmehrener Maar, Weinfelder Maar and Gemündener Maar are known as the “Eyes of the Eifel”.

The Vulkaneifel is designated both as a nature park and as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Here, hiking trails, maars and geotopes make the volcanic history accessible to visitors. Mürmes is a renaturalised, infilled maar with remarkable biodiversity. The grounds of the forest school are used for forest youth games and can provide hikers with shade beneath beech trees.

The Vulcano Trail circular hiking route leads from Schalkenmehren through the Mürmes nature reserve and Mehren, returning to Schalkenmehren. The Vulcano Trail offers views of the Mehren Maar.

Cycling

The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route passes through Mehren. The S1 cycling loop passes the St Matthias Church. Mehren lies within the VulkanBike TrailPark, which has 750 km of trails.

Culture

The Mehren cemetery cross is a 3.10 m-high sandstone Renaissance cross dating from 1542. The Renaissance portal of Mehren parish church comes from Himmerod Abbey. The Zimmermanns-Heiligenhäuschen shrine stands on the B 421 at the exit from Mehren towards Daun; the Mehren church choir lovingly restored it.

Mehren’s cultural calendar includes exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, carnival events and a village festival. The tradition of Fat Thursday in Mehren dates back to 1948.
