The Immerather Maar is a maar lake without an inflow; its water is replenished by precipitation, surface water, and groundwater. Its 66-hectare area includes shoreline, fen, and meadow habitats that provide refuge for plants and animals. Rare birds, frogs, dragonflies, and butterflies live at the Immerather Maar. It formed approximately 40,000 to 70,000 years ago and is stop 21 on the German Volcano Route.
Culture
The Trinity Chapel is Immerath’s landmark and offers a view over the village in the maar basin. The Immerath School Museum is located in a historic half-timbered building dating from 1770 that served as a school until 1910. Immerath’s former school and bakehouse houses two functioning ovens and a school museum.
The Sensory Trail in and around Immerath comprises 15 stations. Accompanied by music, the village community proceeds along a Stations of the Cross trail with stone stations to the Trinity Chapel.
