Ellscheid: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

West of Ellscheid lies the Mürmes nature reserve, a moorland area of around 40 hectares that formed in a volcanic depression created approximately 11,000 years ago.

Nature

Hiking and Trails

The access route to the Mürmes circular trail starts at the cemetery car park in Ellscheid and reaches Mürmes after approximately 800 metres. A walk around Mürmes begins at the cemetery car park on Mürmesweg in Ellscheid. The Mürmes circular trail includes stations about the habitats at Mittelweiher and in Mürmes; there is also a permanently installed pair of binoculars for observing the wetland.

The Vulcano Path Määrchenroute starts and ends at Janshen Poultry Farm on Moselweg in Ellscheid. It leads to Mürmes and the Demerather Drees, a volcanic mineral spring in the Eifel. The HeimatSpur Antoniusweg has only slight inclines and is described as suitable for families, Nordic walkers and joggers.

Culture and History

A village walk presents local stories and the history of Ellscheid at 25 stations. Celtic burial mounds are recorded around Ellscheid; the largest group is located in Starkenbruch. The burial mounds are described as clearly visible in the forest and associated with the Hallstatt-period Eifel-Hunsrück culture.

The original structure of St. Antonius Church in Ellscheid was built in 1772. The statues of the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony and Saint Lucy in St. Antonius Church date from the 13th century.

Vulkaneifel

The Vulkaneifel is characterised by maar volcanoes, volcanic cones, lava flows and mineral springs; it also features informative hiking trails, maars and geotopes.
