The fortress and mills tell different stories

Germersheim Fortress is considered the largest Bavarian fortress outside Bavaria. Numerous significant, well-preserved buildings surround the entire town centre. The fortress therefore offers a clear focus for anyone interested in historic architecture: the buildings are not confined to a single spot but surround the town centre.

The Queich Mills circular walking trail around Bellheim offers a different perspective on the area’s historic heritage. It connects four of the six surviving mills and brings the region’s milling heritage to life. The fortress and the mill trail thus represent different themes: the preserved architectural history of a town on the one hand, and the tradition of milling along a circular walk on the other.

Meadow landscapes and stork watching

The Queich meadows form an approximately 350-hectare, still actively operated meadow irrigation system. It stretches through Landau, Offenbach, Hochstadt, Ottersheim, Knittelsheim, Bellheim and Zeiskam, and on to Germersheim. Irrigation is therefore as much a part of the landscape as the towns and villages through which the system runs.

In summer, up to 400 storks gather in the Queich meadow system before migrating south; numbers and timing vary. Another opportunity for nature watching is the Winden Stork Trail: between February and August, you can observe storks in their nests, foraging for food and in flight. Sightings are not guaranteed.

The Stork Trail is a four-kilometre circular route with 15 information boards about the white stork, local history, and flora and fauna. Along the route are rest areas and playgrounds, a barefoot path, a Kneipp wading pool, an observation platform, a monitor showing camera footage from some nests, and a pick-your-own garden. Individual facilities may depend on maintenance and seasonal conditions. If a particular amenity is important for your visit, it is best to check its status in advance.

Cycling routes between waterways and floodplains

The Germersheim Waterways cycling route follows mostly paved cycle paths around Germersheim, passing numerous bodies of water, the Rhine riverbank, the mouth of the Queich and the old Rhine channels of the Palatinate. It leads to the Palatinate Rhine floodplains in the Insel Grün nature reserve, a landscape with unique flora and fauna. The route is suitable for family outings and can be shortened—useful if you want to keep some flexibility when planning your preferred ride length.

The 44.4-kilometre Bienwald–Rhine Floodplains Tour offers a different regional route. It passes through the Bienwald forest and the Rhine floodplains near Hagenbach and Neuburg am Rhein, in the south of the Palatinate near the French border. The two cycling routes can thus be distinguished by their described landscapes and route profiles. As conditions on the Bienwald–Rhine Floodplains Tour may change seasonally, it is advisable to check route information before setting out.
