Zeiskam was first documented in 774 under the name Zezzinchheim in the Speyergau region. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment and get to know the town will find historical, cultural, and agricultural points of interest here.
History
In the 11th century, the grounds of the Haimbach commandery housed a monastic estate or Benedictine monastery; in 1185, it was transferred to the Order of St. John. At the Heimbach commandery of the Order of St. John, Emperor Henry VII and his court celebrated the marriage of his son John to Elisabeth of Bohemia in 1310. The site commemorated by the reconstructed Gothic arch is associated with a meeting between John and Elisabeth in 1310, before their wedding in Speyer. The reconstructed Gothic arch and the landscaped grounds of the Haimbach commandery are freely accessible.
Culture
The Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew was initially built in 1755–1756 as a simultaneous church for both denominations. An inscription above St. Bartholomew's records that Catholics and Protestants built the church together.
Local Life
At the annual Zeiskam Kirwe festival, an Onion Queen and an Onion Princess are elected; both represent the village at official events. The Zwewwlfest features a horse figure covered in onions called the Onion Stallion.
Regional Products
For centuries, vegetable cultivation and seed trading have been central elements of Zeiskam's agricultural identity. Schick'es Lädel sells salads, vegetable mixes, homemade delicatessen salads, dressings, and barbecue products produced on the farm.
Getting Around
At the northern edge of Zeiskam, seasonal rail bikes run along the former railway line between Landau and Lingenfeld. The historic beer cellar at the northern exit of Zeiskam dates back to 1842.
