Hatzenbühl: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Hatzenbühl can then continue searching for accommodation. Hatzenbühl is located in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and is known as Germany’s oldest tobacco-growing municipality. Around 300 tobacco-drying sheds still remain in the town, which is also situated on the northern edge of the Bienwald forest.

Culture

The center of Hatzenbühl preserves well-maintained half-timbered houses. Hatzenbühl was first mentioned in official records in 1272. Remains of Roman graves and a villa rustica indicate that the Hatzenbühl area was settled around 2,000 years ago.

In 1573, the priest Anselm Anselmann planted tobacco in Hatzenbühl’s rectory garden. The historic tobacco culture is represented by a tobacco queen, who is elected for two years. A large proportion of the fresh sauerkraut consumed in southern Germany is processed in Hatzenbühl.

The historic tower and choir of St. Wendelinus Church date from the 13th century. The church was rebuilt in 1929–1930 under the priest Josef Ohmer and contains a copy of the Madonna of Speyer.

Routes

The Tobacco Circular Trail begins at Hatzenbühl’s rectory garden and is open to the public. The approximately two-kilometer-long trail presents the entire tobacco-growing season; information boards explain the work involved in cultivating tobacco plants. Parking for the Tobacco Circular Trail is available opposite the town hall.

Nature

Hatzenbühl is one of the municipalities covered by the Bienwald visitor management plan. The project aims to signpost or mark approximately 210 kilometers of hiking trails and 150 kilometers of cycling routes.

Cycling

The “Around the Bienwald” route follows marked cycle paths and low-traffic roads around the Bienwald forest. From the Jockgrim station, cyclists can follow the signs to Hatzenbühl and join the “Around the Bienwald” route at the edge of the town.
