Winden: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Stork Trail runs through Winden, an approximately four-kilometre-long themed trail that focuses on the lives of white storks. A viewing platform offers views of stork nests. Along the entire trail, an interactive rally with nature experiences, quiz questions, photography challenges and creative tasks also takes place.

Culture

The Protestant church was built in 1745 as a new Baroque church. Inside is a Late Gothic baptismal font from the former chapel, which was rediscovered in 1920. The town hall was built in 1759 as a simple half-timbered house and was already being used as a town hall in 1760.

The night watchman's house was built in 1823 and today displays original interior furnishings from the first half of the 20th century. The Winden Local History Museum portrays rural working life through agricultural tools and equipment. It also displays tools and objects from traditional crafts, including saddlery, wheelwrighting, wooden-shoe making and shoemaking. The Winden Local History Museum is open continuously and can be visited day and night, as it is presented behind glass.

Getting Around

Winden's historic railway station building dates from 1855. By 26 November 1855 at the latest, the Maximilian Railway via Winden to Wissembourg was open to traffic. Historically, Winden was a stop for international express trains to Switzerland and France; customs formalities were handled at the station.

Today, Winden is a regional railway junction. On the west side of the station there is a park-and-ride facility for changing from road to rail. A direct train connection from Winden reaches Wissembourg in Alsace.

Landscape

The orchards around Winden bloom with cherry and apple blossoms in spring. They can be viewed along the Riesling-Zander Cycle Route and the Farm-to-Farm Cycle Tour.

In the Germersheim district, the Southern Palatinate is promoted for its flat, well-marked hiking trails between vineyards, the Bienwald forest and the Rhine. Hiking trails in the Southern Palatinate are described as suitable for lowland hiking, including for families with children.
