Culture
The old village centre contains traditional buildings and two notable churches. These include St. Urban, a listed church with preserved Romanesque elements, a High Gothic choir, a sacristy dating from 1505, a nave dated 1567, and ceiling paintings renewed in 1726. It is described as the only church in Rheinhessen dedicated to Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers.
The local history of viticulture includes “s Becke Heisje”, a historic vineyard hut characteristic of Rheinhessen’s vineyard houses, and Becks Wingertsheisje. The latter was built in 1909 from stones collected in the surrounding vineyards and fields. Due to its elevated location, Becks Wingertsheisje offers a view across Gau-Heppenheim towards Alzey.
Landscape
The wine trail runs through the vineyards for 2.3 kilometres. Approximately halfway along the route, there is a rest area with a picnic table. There is information about wine at several points along the trail; the wine trail also offers views of the surrounding landscape.
The Bank Hans-Otto viewpoint looks across Gau-Heppenheim towards the Taunus. The Schöne Aussicht viewpoint is located at approximately 235 metres above sea level.
Trails
The 8-kilometre Bohnerz hiking trail connects Gau-Heppenheim with Dittelsheim-Heßloch, Framersheim, Hochborn and Monzernheim. The restored Ruhweg can be walked from Dornweide to the Wasserhaus through a green hedge zone.
The Gau-Heppenheim village loop has no fixed beginning or end and can be accessed from all directions. It has a continuously paved path.
Nature
The Gau-Heppenheim bee nature trail runs for 170 metres along the vineyards. At the Dornweide place of contemplation, there are seats where hikers can take a break.
