Bechenheim: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A hike on the Kneipp-Napoleon Trail starting from Bechenheim has been documented; it led through the Vorholz State Forest. The route was approximately 8 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty; Kappelberg and Napoleonstein were included as stops along the way.

Nature

Near Offenheim, the Hiwweltour Vorholz was opened on 16 May 2026 as an 11.9-kilometre hiking route through one of Rheinhessen’s largest forest areas. It runs along shaded paths, passes historical traces and offers views across the hilly landscape. Next to the Vorholz Forester’s Lodge, at the start of the Hiwweltour Vorholz, there is a Kneipp foot bath that offers relief through walking in water after the hike.

The surroundings can also be explored by bicycle on the Vorholz Loop. The route leads from Nack via Erbes-Büdesheim, Offenheim, Bechenheim and Nieder-Wiesen back to Nack and is approximately 18 kilometres long. It is described as a sporty cycling tour over hills and through valleys, running along the Vorholz Forest. The best views along the route are described as being at the edge of the forest.

Culture and History

The historic church in Bechenheim dates from 1755 and has been used jointly by Protestant and Catholic congregations since 1822. Its seven-metre-high roof turret was added in 1994. Bechenheim was first mentioned in a document in 824, in a donation to Fulda Abbey; a royal estate with a farm is documented for the year 855.

Finds from the Neolithic Hinkelstein culture period have been recorded in Bechenheim. A Frankish cemetery is interpreted as evidence of a Frankish settlement around AD 500. The Roman archaeological site yielded weapons, tools, pottery and coins. In 1928, a Roman settlement site was also discovered near Bechenheim during the excavation of a cremation grave. During a search for water in 1928, a pre-Roman settlement site was discovered in Bechenheim’s Vorholz. Two burial mounds in the Haager district of the Vorholz were opened in 1879; vessels and stone tools were found inside.

The Alzey Museum preserves a cast of a Neolithic shoe-last celt.
